Overview:

The Applied Behavior Specialist delivers services aligned with the mission and values of St.Amant, adhering to the policies and procedures of the designated programs, as well as external regulations and professional standards.

As a key member of the Autism Programs, the Applied Behavior Specialist engages in ongoing quality enhancement initiatives, contributing to the development, adjustment, and execution of service and program objectives, policies, and standards.

This role operates within an interdisciplinary team framework to provide direct, consultative, or mediated service models. The Applied Behavior Specialist advocates for a client-centered service approach, ensuring that family-centered practices are prioritized when appropriate. They foster processes that enhance the skills and competencies of clients and their caregivers in relation to applied behavior analysis interventions.

The Applied Behavior Specialist conducts all responsibilities with professionalism, ethical standards, and integrity, while committing to continuous learning to stay abreast of current knowledge and best practices.

They possess a solid understanding of social policy issues, trends, and practices in the field, as well as the needs, gaps, and opportunities that can enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities, promoting social justice, equity, and accessibility.

Qualifications:

Educational:

  • Master's degree in Psychology from an accredited institution with a focus on Applied Behavior Analysis

Professional:

  • Certification as a Behavior Analyst (BACB) or application for certification within the initial year of employment
  • Proficiency in French is advantageous

Clinical Expertise:

  • Current knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis theory and practice
  • Minimum of one year of experience in designing and implementing programs for children with autism spectrum disorder
  • Understanding of the service structure for individuals with disabilities in Manitoba
  • Proficient in designing and executing behavioral interventions
  • Familiarity with various standardized assessment tools, functional analysis, and behavioral assessment techniques, along with the ability to interpret assessment results
  • Skilled in creating data collection systems and analyzing the resulting information
  • Comprehensive knowledge of behavior analysis theory and practice relevant to supporting, assessing, and treating children with developmental disabilities
  • Awareness of literature in this field, including the history of support and treatment for the ASD population, as well as philosophies and practices regarding their care, education, and lifestyle
  • Ability to lead and engage in interdisciplinary teamwork to provide services in clinical, educational, or living environments for individuals with ASD
  • Competence in case management and defining service plans with individuals and their caregivers
  • Knowledgeable about direct, mediated, and consultative practice models, with the ability to apply these in accordance with Autism Program protocols

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with each child's family and support network to create and implement a comprehensive ABA program plan that addresses the child's overall needs, with specific accountability for coordinating the ABA components of the plan
  • Enhancing adaptive behaviors and reducing challenging behaviors through behavioral assessments, designing, monitoring, implementing, and evaluating relevant programs and plans, and making data-driven treatment decisions regarding the child's well-being
  • Participating in reviews or IEP team meetings to ensure effective communication necessary for maintaining a consistent, strong person-centered focus and follow-up with ABA interventions
  • Providing consultative and mediated services to clients through families, autism tutors, senior tutors, teachers, and educational assistants, while offering regular feedback on their performance
  • Assisting program managers in planning and delivering appropriate orientation and ongoing training for autism senior tutors and tutors to enhance their ABA training skills
  • Identifying trends in service delivery or changing client needs and recommending improvement strategies
  • Conducting home visits or off-site visits when necessary to reach clients who may not have access to the center's services and providing essential support
  • Traveling to rural communities as required, which may include overnight stays
