Our mission focuses on safeguarding marine wildlife and ensuring the oceans can sustain a growing population. Protecting the oceans is vital not only for mitigating climate change but also for preserving the livelihoods of fishing communities.

The Lead Communications Strategist will play a crucial role in promoting Oceana's U.S. initiatives through effective communication strategies. Key campaigns include:

  1. Minimizing plastic pollution
  2. Halting the expansion of harmful offshore drilling
  3. Advocating for transparency in maritime activities
  4. Supporting sustainable fishing practices
  5. Aiding in the protection of marine species such as sharks and whales

This position also involves planning, coordinating, and executing significant strategic events and special projects.

In addition to providing expert communications guidance, the Lead Communications Strategist will proactively identify and implement strategic actions to influence policymakers and enhance public awareness and engagement. Responsibilities include comprehensive public relations management, overseeing initiatives from research and planning to execution and evaluation. This role requires fostering and maintaining strong relationships with media outlets to secure coverage for Oceana's campaigns across various platforms.

The Lead Communications Strategist will oversee the development and production of campaign materials, which includes managing timelines and budgets, facilitating reviews, and ensuring effective content creation. The role demands the ability to craft strategic messaging, translate scientific data into accessible formats, and tailor communications for diverse audiences, including media, government officials, donors, and the general public.

Candidates should excel in managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment that requires quick decision-making and strong multitasking abilities. Attention to detail and exceptional written and verbal communication skills are essential. Ideal candidates will be problem-solvers with excellent customer service skills, demonstrating high levels of organization and responsiveness.

Strong applicants will possess a Bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, communications, or a related field, along with five to eight years of experience in public relations, particularly in media relations, event management, and project oversight, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
