Position Overview:

The City of Red Deer is seeking a Community Services Accountant to fulfill a term role. This position is crucial for maintaining the accuracy of the financial and accounting records within the Community Services Division. The Community Services Accountant will provide guidance and support to various directors, superintendents, managers, and their respective teams, as well as associated organizations.

The role includes offering financial and administrative assistance, which encompasses interpreting, reporting, and overseeing internal controls for the Community Services Division Director and other key personnel. Responsibilities also involve monitoring both operating and capital budgets, along with executing transactional accounting tasks for the division. The successful candidate will engage in financial projects that align with the objectives of the Community Services Division.

Ideal Qualifications:

  • A completed undergraduate degree in accounting or finance, along with the CPA designation.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in accounting roles, providing financial analysis and advice in a large organization, ideally within a municipal community services context.
  • Proficient understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), particularly in relation to municipal accounting practices and procedures in an integrated computer environment.
  • At least four years of experience utilizing complex computerized accounting systems.
  • Familiarity with business software, including Word and PowerPoint, with advanced skills in Excel.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the City of Red Deer’s core principles of Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence.
  • Proven experience in applying accounting theory in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Strong capability to process a high volume of information accurately and efficiently within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, even when priorities conflict.
  • Experience in leading, training, and mentoring staff.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and effective communication abilities, both verbal and written, with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient use of standard office equipment, such as photocopiers, fax machines, and calculators.
  • Working knowledge of office, accounting, and records management practices.

Compensation:

$41.16 to $43.58 per hour.

Work Schedule:

75 hours biweekly, Monday to Friday, with potential evening and weekend commitments.

Additional Notes:

This position is expected to last approximately 12 months.
