A Crane and Hoist Technician operates various lifting equipment at construction sites, including cranes, hoists, and winches, to transport materials, machinery, and personnel. They are responsible for assessing ground conditions to identify potential hazards and must adhere to the operational limits of their equipment to prevent overloading.
Key Responsibilities
- Attach, elevate, maneuver, and position loads with precision.
- Control speed, acceleration, and braking through effective communication with fellow operators.
- Oversee machinery performance and troubleshoot any operational issues.
- Maintain and lubricate cables and winches to ensure optimal performance.
- Replace damaged or worn cables as necessary.
Qualifications
Operators in this field may possess one of the following certifications:
- Personnel Hoist and Construction Elevator Operator (PHCEO)
- Car Switch and Construction Use Elevator Operator (CSOCEO)
Additional requirements include:
- Proficient understanding of mobile cranes, hoists, and winches.
- Intermediate mathematical skills.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory, including hard hats, high-visibility vests, and steel-toed boots; additional PPE such as safety glasses and masks is preferred.
- A basic tool belt is advantageous.
- Strong commitment to safety practices.
- Eligibility to work in Canada is required.
