About the Role

The Laboratory Support Technician operates under the supervision of management, collaborating with all personnel in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM). This role is essential in executing various tasks associated with the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory testing. Responsibilities encompass: specimen collection, receipt, and processing; data entry; preparation of media, reagents, and smears; sterilization; clerical tasks; and loading specimens onto analytical equipment. Additional duties may involve supply management, troubleshooting, and providing customer service.

Ensuring accurate patient identification and proper specimen handling is critical. Responsibilities may vary based on the specific operational needs of the laboratory division or community where the technician is assigned. The technician may be required to work on rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, and may also need to perform duties off-site, such as in long-term care facilities or private residences. Interaction with various stakeholders and clients is also part of the role. Adherence to all relevant policies and procedures is mandatory, alongside strict compliance with safety and infection control protocols. Technicians must demonstrate the ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, maintain a professional appearance, and provide excellent customer service.

Qualifications

We invite candidates who possess the following qualifications:

  • Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent as determined by the employer.
  • Successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations from the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and current registration with CSMLS.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Manual dexterity for handling sharp instruments and small items.
  • Capability to perform tasks with a high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to correctly label specimens and organize slides and requisitions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes in operational procedures.
  • Basic computer proficiency; experience with Meditech is preferred.
  • Reliable transportation may be necessary due to potential travel requirements.
  • Proficiency in additional languages is an asset, with French being preferred.

Work Schedule
  • Opportunities for casual, short-term, long-term assignments, and permanent positions are available.

Compensation

The hourly wage is $26.27.
