Job Title: Biosafety Research Leader

BC Cancer is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Biosafety Research Leader to join our team. As a key member of our Research Facilitation Office, you will be responsible for ensuring the effective coordination of biosafety programs within our research sites.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and manage all aspects of laboratory and clinical research-related safety issues, including biological safety, chemical safety, emergency preparedness, and occupational health and safety.
  • Develop and audit the effectiveness of biosafety, chemical safety, and emergency planning programs, including inspections, investigations, and trend analysis.
  • Identify training needs and develop and implement biosafety and chemical safety training programs, including general biosafety, chemical and cytotoxics safety, emergency management planning, and biological safety cabinet use.
  • Liaise with and assist the PHSA Employee Wellness and Safety Department with the development, implementation, and monitoring of health surveillance programs.
  • Undertake risk assessments and recommend risk mitigation strategies, including procedural and physical laboratory modifications.
  • Inspect facilities and operational practices to ensure compliance with safety programs, legislative, and regulatory requirements.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Five years of recent, related experience, including leadership experience in laboratory operations, laboratory administration, emergency response management, project management, biosafety, biosecurity, and biocontainment.
  • Experience working in and/or design of Biocontainment Level 3 facilities is an asset.
