The Liquid Waste Services Department is in search of a Lead Project Engineer who will oversee the planning, design, and execution of sewage pump stations, odour control systems, and various civil/mechanical projects related to sewage and drainage infrastructure across the region. This role is crucial in maintaining the organization's reputation through transparent and constructive interactions with external entities and the public.
You are: A licensed Professional Engineer who is proactive, results-driven, and capable of working independently. You possess a comprehensive background in Civil or Mechanical Engineering, with experience in project management, design, and field operations within water, wastewater, or industrial processing sectors. Your history as a project leader showcases your ability to manage multidisciplinary initiatives effectively. You are organized, skilled in developing and implementing project work plans, and adept at applying cost-effective engineering solutions. You excel in both verbal and written communication with stakeholders at all levels and have a clear vision for project execution.
The Lead Project Engineer reports to the Senior Engineering Lead.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts intricate and diverse engineering and project management tasks, which may include design and oversight of large-scale projects. Applies professional principles and practices to ensure sound and practical outcomes.
- Evaluates requirements and suggests optimal strategies for achieving project goals.
- Manages overall project budgets, monitors expenditures, and ensures efficient use of allocated resources. Engages in both short-term and long-term planning.
- Makes informed decisions and provides recommendations on various issues, guided by broad policies and mandates. Utilizes creativity to develop original, practical, and economical solutions.
- Prepares and reviews project designs, technical documentation, and contract specifications for consulting services, equipment, and construction. Acts as the organization's representative in project and contract matters, including site inspections and regulatory compliance.
- Directs consultant activities, recommending scope adjustments and negotiating new terms as necessary. Addresses a full spectrum of project dimensions, including legal, property, public relations, and interactions with various governmental and regulatory bodies.
- Communicates complex concepts clearly and persuades others to adopt specific viewpoints, supporting arguments with evidence and relevant experience. Typically serves as a project leader, fostering teamwork, collaboration, and efficiency.
- May supervise professional engineers and/or technical staff engaged in complex technical tasks. Reviews colleagues' work and provides guidance to consulting engineers and technical personnel. Acts as a resource for staff seeking advice on potential approaches and problem-solving strategies.
- May serve as a technical resource, collaborating with senior engineers, management, and government officials on regulatory or policy initiatives affecting the organization.
- Participates in the design, preparation, and approval of engineering standards within the area of expertise.
- Performs additional related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Applied Science degree in a relevant engineering discipline, with 4-6 years of recent related experience following professional registration, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Membership or eligibility for immediate membership as a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the relevant engineering association.
- Strong technical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles and their application in the relevant field. Ability to serve as a resource for staff and provide practical guidance in unusual or challenging situations.
- Proficiency in interpreting and applying engineering and technical guidelines related to the area of specialization, including technical manuals, codes, regulations, and corporate policies.
- Proven skills in contract administration and project management. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize complex project components to meet multiple deadlines with a high level of detail and accuracy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
- Strong interpersonal skills, capable of building and maintaining respectful relationships with internal and external stakeholders in complex and time-sensitive situations.
- Ability to work under broad direction, exercising independent judgment to solve problems when multiple options exist. Proven initiative and capability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
- Understanding of the organizational culture and processes necessary to achieve work objectives, upholding the organization's reputation through positive interactions.
- Ability to mentor and guide others, enhancing individual and team effectiveness.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project.
Candidates with less experience may be considered for a different level with an appropriate salary adjustment.
