We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced PhD researcher to join our team at the Aquaculture Association Of Canada. The successful candidate will be responsible for investigating the role of the gut microbiome on the health and nutrition of salmonid fishes.
Key Responsibilities:- Conduct a comprehensive literature review and meta-analysis on fish gut microbiome studies.
- Design and conduct bench trials (in vitro) using a Robogut bioreactor to simulate the fish gut.
- Perform feeding trials (in vivo) to determine the effects of diet and family on the microbiome.
- Collect and analyze samples from fish at various stages of growth and development.
- Analyze nutritional data from feeds and fish, including proximate, amino acids, and fatty acids.
- Conduct gene expression, genotyping, and 16S microbiome sequence data analyses.
- Develop and implement statistical analysis in R and write several papers for publication.
- Present research findings at conferences and workshops.
- Strong background in fish biology and aquaculture, with additional knowledge of molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, genetics, and/or nutrition.
- MSc degree in fish biology, aquaculture, animal science, or a related field.
- Experience in laboratory work, data analysis, statistical analysis, and writing for publication.
- Molecular lab skills, including DNA/RNA extractions, PCR library preparation, and qPCR.
- Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and think critically.
- Strong written and oral communication skills and experience presenting at conferences.
- Hands-on experience feeding and dissecting rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon.
- Experience assisting technicians and graduate students with fish research trials.
- Experience coding and using bioinformatic pipelines on sequence data.
