Media & Community Relations Manager - PWHL Ottawa

Position Overview
The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) Ottawa is in search of a dedicated and skilled individual to take on the role of Media and Community Relations Manager. This position is crucial for leading all media and community engagement efforts within the Ottawa market, playing a vital role in the development of the PWHL Ottawa team through effective communication strategies, storytelling, and relationship management that aligns with league standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement comprehensive communications strategies and initiatives that cater to the local market while ensuring alignment with league goals.
  • Develop and deliver strategic messaging that highlights player narratives, promotes the sport, drives business objectives, and supports community initiatives through collaboration with league and team leadership.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with a variety of local media outlets, actively seeking innovative coverage opportunities across multiple platforms including print, digital, radio, and television to enhance audience engagement and brand recognition.
  • Manage the media accreditation process for the team. Prepare media materials such as press releases, game notes, and post-game summaries for timely distribution to local media contacts. Create player profiles that showcase individual stories, achievements, and experiences.
  • Coordinate and facilitate interviews for team personnel and players, ensuring effective communication with media representatives.
  • Proactively engage in media appearances and community events alongside team staff and players to boost visibility and foster community relations.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of themed events for the team.
  • Oversee the charitable donation program.
  • Participate in regular meetings with the league's Communications department, contributing to the alignment of performance objectives and sharing best practices.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive company information, employee records, and team data.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in sports media relations, public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • A Bachelor's degree in communications, media, sports management, or a related discipline is required.
  • Experience within the sports and entertainment sector is preferred.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and MS Office is essential.
  • Availability to attend all home games and events, along with regular attendance at practices and travel for away games is required.

  • Demonstrated expertise in media and community relations, with a proven ability to produce engaging written content, deliver impactful public presentations, and build lasting positive relationships.
  • Creative mindset with strong storytelling abilities, complemented by excellent research skills and a talent for generating innovative ideas.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to facilitate information sharing across departments.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and improvement, with a proactive approach to enhancing processes and staying informed about industry trends.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment, ensuring timely achievement of objectives.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by event schedules and project deadlines.
  • Bilingual proficiency in French and English (both written and spoken) is considered a valuable asset.
