Media & Community Relations Manager - PWHL Ottawa

Position Overview
The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) Ottawa is in search of a dedicated and skilled Media and Community Relations Manager. This role is pivotal in leading all media and community engagement initiatives within the Ottawa area, playing a crucial part in the advancement of the PWHL Ottawa team through effective communication strategies, narrative development, and relationship management that align with league standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement tailored communication strategies and policies that resonate with local market dynamics while supporting league objectives.
  • Develop and execute strategic messaging that highlights player stories, promotes the sport, drives business initiatives, and fosters community involvement through collaboration with league and team leadership.
  • Build and maintain relationships with a variety of local media outlets, actively seeking innovative opportunities for coverage across multiple platforms to enhance audience engagement and brand recognition.
  • Manage the media accreditation process for the team. Prepare media materials such as press releases, game notes, and post-game summaries for timely distribution to local media.
  • Coordinate interviews for team personnel and players, ensuring effective communication with media representatives.
  • Engage in media appearances and community events alongside team staff and players to boost visibility and community involvement.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of themed events for the team.
  • Oversee the charitable donation program.
  • Participate in regular meetings with the league's Communications department to align performance goals and share best practices.
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding proprietary company information and records.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in sports media relations, public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • A Bachelor's degree in communications, media, sports management, or a related discipline is required.
  • Experience within the sports and entertainment sector is preferred.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and MS Office programs is essential.
  • Availability to attend all home games and events, along with regular practices and travel for away games is necessary.

  • Demonstrated expertise in media and community relations, with a proven ability to produce engaging written content and foster positive relationships.
  • Creative storytelling abilities, strong research skills, and a knack for generating innovative ideas.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to facilitate information sharing across departments.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and improvement, with a proactive approach to enhancing processes and staying informed about industry trends.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment, ensuring timely achievement of objectives.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by event schedules.
  • Bilingual proficiency in French and English (both written and spoken) is considered a valuable asset.
