About the Position
In this pivotal role, you will report directly to the AVP of Accounting and Controls within Canadian Finance. You will be responsible for overseeing a dedicated team of finance professionals, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting for Sun Life Financial. Your leadership will guide the quarterly consolidated financial reporting processes, supporting strategic decision-making at the senior management level.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all facets of consolidated financial reporting and analysis, including earnings assessments and forecasting.
- Lead the quarterly financial reporting initiatives for SLF Canada, ensuring seamless coordination of the ledger closing process.
- Provide direct support for the quarterly attestation process for senior executives, ensuring all financial data is complete and governed by robust controls.
- Maintain governance over accounting practices and ledger controls, executing monitoring controls to uphold a strong control environment.
- Collaborate effectively with various functional areas across SLF Canada to facilitate the successful execution of strategic initiatives and process enhancements.
- Foster a culture of talent development, creating an engaging and supportive workplace that enables employees to thrive.
Qualifications:
- 7 to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a large, preferably public institution, with a focus on reporting, audits, regulatory compliance, and internal controls.
- A degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required.
- CPA or CA designation, with experience in a large accounting firm preferred.
- Ability to quickly grasp the operations and financial landscape of the Canadian Business Group, including key control risks.
- Strong expertise in accounting, analysis, and reporting, with a comprehensive understanding of IFRS and SOX controls applicable to the insurance sector.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, complemented by strong listening abilities.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, with a proven track record of building relationships with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
- Ability to mentor and provide constructive feedback for professional development.
- Demonstrated integrity, credibility, and professionalism.
- Experience in life insurance accounting is advantageous.
- Familiarity with high-level actuarial processes.
- Knowledge of financial software packages such as SAP and Hyperion is beneficial.
