Position Overview: Teaching Assistant, Plant Sciences, PLSC 213

As a Teaching Assistant in the Plant Sciences department, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing laboratory materials for student use and maintaining plant demonstration specimens in a controlled environment.
  • Delivering pre-laboratory instructions and supervising a laboratory section in various settings, including teaching labs and growth facilities.
  • Engaging with students or student groups through discussion platforms, video conferencing, email, or during office hours.
  • Providing constructive feedback to students and evaluating laboratory assignments.
  • Your designated workspace will be in the laboratory facilities, reporting directly to the laboratory coordinator.

Additional Responsibilities for 20-Hour Position:

  • Overseeing and grading midterm and final examinations.
  • Offering support for the PLSC lecture series.
  • Reporting to the course instructor.

Work Hours: Two positions of 72 hours each and one position of 20 hours during the academic term.

Employment Duration: Regular Fall session.

Course Information: PLSC 213 - Principles of Plant Ecology.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences is required, along with enrollment in a graduate program. Preference will be given to candidates currently pursuing a plant ecology-focused curriculum or those with a robust background in plant ecology.

Prior coursework in advanced undergraduate or graduate-level plant ecology is essential.

Experience in teaching, public speaking, plant identification, field sampling, proficiency in Excel, and coordination of laboratory experiments and activities will be regarded as advantageous skills.
