Position Overview

The Pathologists' Assistant Supervisor for Anatomic Surgical Pathology plays a crucial role in overseeing the operations of the Gross Room and Morgue, ensuring high standards of quality and compliance in all activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate daily operations, ensuring effective prioritization and organization of staff activities.
  • Provide guidance and training for new employees and students, fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • Supervise technical grossing tasks, ensuring accurate grossing and dictation of surgical and biopsy specimens.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of dissection techniques and laboratory operations to implement improvements and ensure staff competency.
  • Ensure proper specimen accessioning, preparation, and documentation, including data entry into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Manage the technical functions within the Morgue, including staff training, quality control, and compliance with legal requirements for autopsies.
  • Develop and implement operational guidelines and policies to uphold quality standards.
  • Participate in the recruitment and performance evaluation of staff, providing constructive feedback and support.
  • Facilitate the training of medical students and residents, enhancing their practical skills and knowledge.
  • Conduct research under the supervision of a Pathologist, presenting findings at relevant scientific forums.
  • Collaborate with various departments to assess research impacts and streamline processes.

Qualifications

  • Certification or eligibility for certification with the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistants (CCCPA).
  • Graduation from an accredited Master's Pathologist Assistant Program, with three years of relevant experience, including supervisory roles.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the standards of practice for Pathologists' Assistants.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and support team members.
  • Proficient in diagnostic anatomic pathology principles and practices.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, with an understanding of Indigenous issues and reconciliation efforts.
