Position Overview: Supervisor, Accounting

About the Role

In this pivotal role, reporting directly to the Director of Finance, the Supervisor of Accounting will oversee all financial accounting and record-keeping activities. This includes managing accounts receivable, accounts payable, general accounting, and the processes for month-end and year-end closures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise daily accounting operations, fostering professional growth and establishing performance objectives while providing ongoing feedback and coaching.
  • Lead the month-end closing activities to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the review and approval of journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Coordinate the year-end external audit process and act as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Administer the corporate credit card program effectively.
  • Evaluate and enhance accounting and internal control systems, identifying business risks and developing comprehensive financial policies and procedures.
  • Assist in managing insurance to ensure adequate coverage and competitive premiums through annual reporting.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to ensure accurate inventory and purchasing record-keeping.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and financial reporting standards as per industry guidelines and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Support tax compliance and annual income tax filings for the organization.
  • Monitor adherence to company policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in financial accounting, planning, and reporting.
  • Possession of a CPA accounting designation (CGA, CMA, or CA) is preferred, with a background in accounting firms being advantageous.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Experience in a mid-level financial role utilizing computerized financial systems, preferably Dynamics GP and Jet Reports.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word, with strong technical aptitude.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across various business units and respond proactively to inquiries.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the capacity to maintain professional relationships.
  • Strong organizational and analytical capabilities, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Attention to detail and effective time management skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of the regulated electricity market is an asset.
