Position Overview:

The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) is seeking a dedicated Mental Health Counselor to join our Health & Counselling Centre (HCC). This role is pivotal in providing mental health support and counseling services to our diverse student population, particularly focusing on 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Deliver clinical counseling and psychotherapy to individuals and groups, including crisis intervention for distressed students.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of mental health needs and provide appropriate referrals to community resources.
  • Facilitate workshops and group sessions aimed at enhancing mental health awareness and coping strategies.
  • Utilize an anti-oppressive framework to ensure all counseling practices are inclusive and respectful of diverse identities.
  • Collaborate with other university departments to ensure comprehensive support for students.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work or Counseling/Psychotherapy, with current registration in Ontario.
  • A minimum of five years of clinical experience in a community mental health setting.
  • Proven experience working with 2SLGBTQIA+ populations and understanding their unique mental health challenges.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a non-judgmental approach to counseling.
  • Ability to manage crisis situations effectively and provide immediate support to students in need.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in delivering training and workshops related to mental health.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems.
  • Knowledge of community mental health resources and university support services.
