Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Laboratory Animal Care Specialist to join our team. This role involves part-time responsibilities, with scheduled shifts on weekends and public holidays, along with opportunities for additional hours throughout the year. Reporting to the Supervisor of Animal Husbandry, you will be an integral member of the Animal Care team, ensuring the health and welfare of laboratory mice through standard husbandry practices.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Laboratory Animal Care Specialist include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting daily health assessments of animals, noting any changes in health status or behavior;
  • Performing animal husbandry tasks such as cage maintenance, providing food, water, and environmental enrichment;
  • Collaborating effectively with scientific staff and fellow team members;
  • Managing inventory of supplies;
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of housing areas and procedure rooms, ensuring a high standard of vivarium upkeep;
  • Keeping accurate records of animal care activities;
  • Utilizing a specialized database for colony management;
  • Adhering to strict regulatory standards and operating procedures in all tasks.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Completion of or current enrollment in an Animal Care Technician or Veterinary Technician program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment;
  • Capability to lift a minimum of 22lbs and maneuver housing and transfer equipment;
  • Willingness to stand for extended periods while performing animal care duties;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with proficiency in computer usage;
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

All personnel are expected to adhere to safe work practices and comply with health and safety protocols. Successful candidates will be required to provide two written references from previous employers or supervisors.
