Position Overview

We are seeking a permanent part-time Laboratory Animal Care Specialist . The role involves working on a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays, with opportunities for additional hours throughout the year. Reporting to the Supervisor of Animal Husbandry, you will be an integral member of the Animal Care team, responsible for ensuring the health and welfare of laboratory mice.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Laboratory Animal Care Specialist include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting daily health assessments of animals, noting any changes in health status or behavior;
  • Performing animal husbandry tasks such as cage maintenance, feeding, providing water, and ensuring environmental enrichment;
  • Collaborating effectively with scientific staff and fellow team members;
  • Managing inventory of supplies;
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of housing areas, procedure rooms, and suites, working collectively to uphold the vivarium's standards;
  • Keeping accurate records of animal care activities;
  • Utilizing a specialized database for colony management;
  • Adhering to strict regulatory guidelines and standard operating procedures.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Completion of or current enrollment in an Animal Care Technician or Veterinary Technician program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment;
  • Capability to lift a minimum of 22 lbs (feed bags) and maneuver housing and transfer equipment;
  • Willingness to stand for extended periods while performing animal care duties;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with proficiency in computer applications;
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal oversight.

Successful candidates will need to provide two written references from previous employers or supervisors.
