About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Satellite Systems Engineer to join our team at Telesat, a leading global satellite operator. As a member of our LEO Payload Engineering team, you will play a crucial role in the success of our Telesat Lightspeed LEO satellite constellation program.

Main Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with other Telesat Lightspeed segments on key system aspects such as end-to-end communication, network entry, service availability, and satellite payload power consumption management.
  • Liaise with Suppliers: Interface with spacecraft and/or payload unit suppliers to ensure that the development, qualification, and performance of the hardware meets Telesat Lightspeed requirements.
  • Monitor Supplier Performance: Monitor the spacecraft and payload unit suppliers from a technical perspective to ensure that committed services and deliveries meet all technical requirements and remain on schedule.
  • Co-Engineer with Suppliers: Interface directly with supplier engineering staff to understand and resolve design, production, or test issues.
  • Review and Assess Payload Integration: Review and assess payload integration activities to ensure that they meet Telesat Lightspeed requirements.
  • Evaluate Technical Analysis: Evaluate the pertinent technical analysis presented by the spacecraft supplier.
  • Analyze Design Review Data: Analyze design review data and actively participate in various Preliminary, Critical, and Test Readiness Reviews.
  • Provide Technical Reports: Provide technical reports on program status.
  • Participate in In-Orbit Testing: Take an active part in In-Orbit Testing (IOT) of satellite performance and provide recommendations for satellite acceptance and commissioning.
  • Prepare Presentations and Status Reports: Prepare presentations and regular status reports.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical/Aerospace (or equivalent) is required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 12 years of relevant space industry experience.
  • Background: Firm background in satellite payload and/or payload unit engineering.
  • Technical Expertise: Experience with optical communications and/or digital communications and/or space electronics is an asset.
  • Skills: Strong technical, presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Familiarity: Familiarity with satellite/payload manufacturing and supply chain management.
  • Collaborative Software: Comfortable with or willing to learn how to use collaborative software such as Jira, Confluence, and Jama.
  • Language: Bilingual in English and French is an asset (but not required).
Decision Making and Supervision
  • Technical Monitoring: The incumbent will have significant influence on the payload technical monitoring for the Lightspeed program.
  • Decision Making: The incumbent will need to make recommendations and decisions based on their experience and identify key risks and develop risk mitigation plans with suppliers.
  • Leadership: The incumbent may lead task teams in the resolution of technical problems or in spacecraft monitoring activities.
  • Technical Guidance: The incumbent will provide technical guidance to senior and junior engineers from all groups.
