Animal Care Specialist

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Animal Care Specialist to join our team at the BC SPCA. As a key member of our shelter operations, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health, welfare, and well-being of the animals in our care.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide primary care and support to all shelter-based animals, including feeding, cleaning, and socialization.
- Assume a leadership role in designated areas of the shelter, facilitating clear and effective communication with staff and volunteers.
- Oversee the activities of animal care attendants and volunteers, ensuring proper procedures are followed and training is provided.
- Maintain clear communication with staff and volunteers regarding day-to-day operations and duties.
- Ensure the kennels, runs, and cat cages are kept in a manner that promotes animal health and welfare.
- Monitor the health and welfare of animals through regular checks and record-keeping.
- Treat animals humanely, with compassion, and in accordance with the BC SPCA's five freedoms.
- Report any health or welfare concerns to the Manager or designate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers' License and driver's abstract.
- Sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics, and common diseases.
- Previous kennel or animal care experience an asset.
- Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare.
- Ability to work with staff, volunteers, and the public in a positive and practical manner.
- Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills.
- Basic computer skills sufficient for front desk duties.
- Position is physically demanding and requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance.
