The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Animal Care Specialist to join our team in Kelowna, BC.
About the Position:This is a permanent, full-time opportunity to work in a dynamic and expanding team that makes a difference in the lives of animals. As an Animal Care Specialist, you will be responsible for ensuring the optimal levels of care are administered to the animals based on the Five Freedoms. Your primary duties will include:
- Providing primary care and support to all shelter-based animals, including feeding, cleaning, socialization, and transportation.
- Assuming a leadership role in designated areas of the shelter, facilitating clear and effective communication with staff and volunteers.
- Overseeing the activities of animal care attendants and volunteers, ensuring proper procedures are followed and training is provided.
- Maintaining clear communication with staff and volunteers regarding day-to-day operations and duties requiring completion.
- Ensuring the kennels, runs, and cat cages are kept in a manner that is best suited for the animal's health and welfare.
- Monitoring the health and welfare of animals through the maintenance of up-to-date kennel cards, recording information, and completing daily logs.
- Maintaining animals on a proper diet, ensuring daily feeding, watering, exercise, and enrichment.
- Treating animals humanely, with compassion and concern, and in a manner consistent with the BC SPCA's five freedoms.
- Reporting any health or welfare concerns to the Manager or designate.
- Ensuring animals' health and well-being are maintained in accordance with BC SPCA policies and procedures.
- Performing welfare and temperament assessments on animals as needed.
- Conducting contractual animal control duties as required.
- Conducting preliminary cruelty investigations and submitting findings for further investigation.
- Acting as an ambassador of the BC SPCA at all times, ensuring customer and community relations are consistently professional and positive.
- Answering telephones and walk-in inquiries in a courteous manner, providing information satisfactory to the needs of the customer.
- Performing reception duties, including greeting members of the public, answering telephones, responding to emails, and updating animal records.
- Assisting with adoptions, redemptions, and intake of animals, including reviewing lost and found books and adoption applications.
- Ensuring all procedures for receiving, licensing, or adopting animals are conducted according to procedure and meet the needs of customers.
- Assessing the suitability of potential animal adoptive customers for the purposes of best possible match between adopter and animal.
- Supporting and implementing BC SPCA provincial initiatives and adhering to all operational policies and procedures.
- Assisting in local and provincial fund-raising initiatives.
- Working in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.
- Reviewing inventory of shelter supplies and ensuring they are ordered as needed.
- Ensuring the security of the building when entering and exiting.
- Operating the Animal Centre vehicle(s) as needed, including transporting animals to and from the veterinarian clinic(s).
- Working collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to benefit and enhance the health and welfare of shelter animals and create a harmonious team environment.
- Participating in meetings with other members of staff to share ideas and suggestions designed to improve the enjoyment of working for the BC SPCA and increase its productivity.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A High School Diploma or equivalent.
- A valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers' License and driver's abstract.
- A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics, and common diseases.
- Previous kennel or animal care experience will be considered an asset.
- Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare.
- The ability to work with other staff, volunteers, and the public in a positive, practical manner and be able to work with minimum supervision.
- The ability to prioritize demands on time.
- Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills.
- Basic computer skills sufficient to deal effectively with front desk duties.
- The ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties.
- A minimum of one year animal care experience with the BC SPCA or related agency preferred.
