Position Overview:

The Corporate Financial Reporting Specialist plays a crucial role in the development, examination, and oversight of corporate financial documentation and external compliance submissions. This position directly assists the Senior Financial Compliance Analyst within the Financial Reporting Division of Financial and Strategic Services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research, coordinate, and analyze financial data to create professional documents, including reports, presentations, proposals, and correspondence, ensuring timely, accurate, and confidential delivery while adhering to organizational standards.
  • Prepare and present essential information and responses to inquiries from various staff members across the organization, covering topics such as year-end processes, audit requirements, and updates to accounting standards.
  • Investigate any irregular transactions related to financial reporting by engaging with departments and reviewing relevant policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for preparing highly technical expense reimbursement claims associated with disaster recovery efforts.
  • Compile year-end financial statements in compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards, including the preparation and/or review of financial statement notes.
  • Create, update, and assist in the development of various working papers and year-end schedules.
  • Review and prepare year-end account analyses, reconciliations, and working papers for various balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Implement necessary changes identified during audits to enhance financial reporting by researching applicable accounting standards, coordinating with stakeholders, and developing process improvements.
  • Compile information and supporting documentation to address audit requests during interim and year-end audits.
  • Act as the primary liaison for Council Support staff, providing guidance and coordination for Council expense reporting processes.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A degree in Accounting with a minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting or a related field, or an Accounting diploma with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation in progress or obtained is advantageous.
  • Experience in financial analysis, public sector audits, financial statement preparation, and reporting, preferably in a municipal context.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of public sector accounting standards.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to identify issues, assess risks, and propose alternative solutions.
  • Proficiency in working with an integrated ERP system and utilizing it effectively to generate accurate and timely financial information.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking abilities to prioritize and complete tasks within tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrating initiative and resourcefulness.
