Position Overview:

The Highway Maintenance Equipment Operator is a skilled role responsible for the safe operation of various heavy machinery utilized in roadway upkeep. This position involves not only the maintenance of highways but also the effective handling and operation of equipment, ensuring that all tasks are performed in accordance with contract specifications.

The successful candidate will be stationed at the designated maintenance facility.

Work Environment:

Given the nature of a 24/7 operational schedule, the following conditions may be encountered:

Winter Conditions:

  • Extended hours and consecutive days of service.
  • Significant shift work, including on-call and night shifts.
  • Limited visibility during snow removal operations.
  • Planning and scheduling of shifts and emergency call-ins.
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including extreme cold; preparedness with appropriate clothing and Personal Protective Equipment is essential.
  • Navigating traffic under poor road conditions.
  • Responding to accidents and emergencies on highways.

Summer Conditions:

  • Long hours dedicated to highway maintenance.
  • Significant shift work, including on-call and night shifts.
  • Outdoor work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, wind, and rain; preparedness with hydration and appropriate gear is crucial.
  • Managing high traffic volumes in work zones.

Safety and Hazard Management:

  • Conducting hazard assessments as necessary (pre-job, ongoing, and as conditions change).
  • Demonstrating versatility in operating and understanding various heavy equipment.
  • Completing all required documentation, including fuel logs, schedules, road reports, maintenance records, and safety documentation.
  • Understanding the responsibilities and requirements for each assigned task.

Emergency Response Duties:

  • Ensuring proper signage and traffic control devices are in place. Responding to emergency situations, including weather-related incidents, wildlife encounters, and accidents, as outlined in training modules and relevant specifications.

Operational Responsibilities:

  • Operating equipment and performing labor-intensive tasks related to snow and ice control, roadside maintenance, road surface upkeep, traffic control, bridge maintenance, and overall highway maintenance.
  • Inspecting, maintaining, and operating equipment to meet company standards, promptly reporting any issues.
  • Ensuring that vehicles, equipment, facilities, and keys are secured according to company policies.
  • Possessing the stamina to perform physical labor, including standing, walking, and lifting materials and equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. with the appropriate tools.
  • Residing within a reasonable distance from the assigned maintenance facility.
  • Working scheduled hours, including shifts and on-call duties as per company policy.
  • Maintaining the maintenance facilities and ensuring they are stocked with necessary supplies.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Valid Class 1 (preferred) or Class 3 driver's license with air endorsement.
  • Clean and valid driver's abstract.
  • Minimum of 50 hours of experience operating snowplows.
  • Experience and aptitude for operating and performing minor maintenance on light, medium, and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate (preferred).
  • Must reside within a reasonable distance from the assigned facility.
