Position Overview

Volker Stevin Highways is seeking a skilled Highway Maintenance Worker/Operator to join our team. This role involves safely operating various heavy equipment used in highway maintenance projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all work adheres to contract specifications and contributes to the efficient delivery of our Highway Maintenance Program.

Working Environment & Conditions

This position requires adaptability to a 24/7 operational environment with potential exposure to demanding conditions:

  • Winter Conditions: Long hours, continuous service, shift work, on-call duties, and night shifts are common. Expect poor visibility during plowing operations, extreme cold, and the need for appropriate clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). You'll also be dealing with traffic on challenging road conditions and responding to accidents or emergencies.
  • Summer Conditions: Long hours working on highways, shift work, on-call duties, and night shifts are required. Be prepared for extreme heat, windy and rainy conditions, and high traffic volumes in work zones. Proper hydration, clothing, and PPE are essential.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment, including snow plows, graders, loaders, and backhoes, for tasks such as snow and ice control, roadside maintenance, road surface maintenance, traffic control maintenance, bridge maintenance, and general highway maintenance.
  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs on assigned equipment. Report any significant issues or defects promptly.
  • Ensure the secure storage of vehicles, equipment, facilities, yards, and keys according to company standards and policies.
  • Complete all required documentation, including fuel logs, schedule forms, road reports, highway maintenance records, equipment repair requests, safety, and environmental documentation.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety by completing hazard assessments as required (pre-job, ongoing, when moving locations, and as hazards change).
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations, such as weather events, wildlife incidents, or accidents, following established procedures outlined in Operations Excellence Training Modules (OETM), contract provisions, and relevant Alberta Transportation Specifications.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid Class 1 (preferred) or Class 3 driver's license with an air endorsement.
  • Clean and valid driver's abstract.
  • Minimum of 50 hours of experience operating a snow plow.
  • Experience and aptitude for operating and performing minor maintenance on various types of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in demanding conditions.
