Lead the initiative in establishing and nurturing relationships with Indigenous communities on behalf of Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (LP) in British Columbia. Assess and interpret governmental policies concerning Indigenous matters and evaluate their potential implications for the organization's operations. Serve as the primary liaison for LP, managing communications directly with Indigenous officials, community members, and other relevant entities. Review internal policies, plans, and programs to ensure alignment with provincial and federal regulations pertaining to Indigenous affairs. Actively support and engage in the company's diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across Canadian operations, emphasizing the integration of Indigenous viewpoints, cultural awareness training, and the enhancement of relationships with Indigenous Peoples.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Formulate strategies and plans for Indigenous engagement within the organization.
  • Provide continuous guidance and support to forestry teams in Peace Valley and Dawson Creek regarding Indigenous engagement and issue management.
  • Lead or participate in meetings with Indigenous groups on behalf of the company.
  • Identify, monitor, and address issues, concerns, and interests raised by Indigenous communities.
  • Advise the organization on project development issues and assist in crafting solutions and strategies to address these matters as necessary.
  • Facilitate the negotiation of agreements between the organization and Indigenous groups when required.
  • Engage in the company's Indigenous relations strategies, focusing on identifying mutually beneficial business opportunities and partnerships with Indigenous communities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with leaders of Indigenous communities, particularly where LP has established partnership agreements.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues to further support and enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion programs across Canadian operations.
  • Work alongside other Canadian regions and corporate functional groups, such as Certification and Sustainability, to maximize effectiveness and share best practices.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY

  • Proven success in managing relationships between First Nations and other stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of Indigenous perspectives, acquired through experience working with Indigenous communities on engagement planning, regulatory matters, capacity building, and education/training initiatives.
  • Familiarity with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), along with British Columbia's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA).
  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant federal and provincial legislation and policies.
  • Ability to engage with Elders, leaders, and representatives to cultivate strong relationships with various Indigenous groups.
  • Capability to develop and implement outreach and engagement strategies and plans.
  • Advanced skills in report writing, public speaking, event coordination, and the creation of communication materials.
  • Adept at working collaboratively and building networks both internally and externally.
  • Strong conflict resolution, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, including the capacity to facilitate respectful dialogue.

EDUCATION

  • Undergraduate degree, college diploma, or professional certification in a relevant field (e.g., Indigenous Studies, Aboriginal Law, Environmental Management, Economics, Engineering, Accounting, Communications, Public Policy, or a related discipline from an accredited program).
  • In addition to 5+ years of recent, relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in applied Indigenous engagement within the natural resources sector.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time.
  • Candidate should be open to relocation as necessary.
