Under the supervision of management or their designate, the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) collaborates with all members of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) team by executing various tasks related to the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory testing. Responsibilities may include: specimen collection, receipt and processing, data entry, preparation of media/reagents/smears, sterilization, clerical duties, and loading specimens onto analyzers. Additional tasks may involve supply management, troubleshooting, and customer service interactions.
Accurate patient identification and proper specimen handling are critical to this role. Duties may vary based on the operational needs of the laboratory site or community where the MLA is employed. The MLA may be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays, and may also need to travel to various locations, including long-term care facilities or private residences as necessary. Interaction with diverse stakeholders and clients is also expected. Adherence to all applicable NSH/PLM policies and procedures is mandatory, and strict compliance with safety and infection control protocols is essential. MLAs should be capable of working independently, exercising sound judgment, maintaining a professional appearance in accordance with dress code policies, and demonstrating exceptional customer service skills.
We invite applications from individuals who possess the following qualifications:
- Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent (as determined by the employer)
- Successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations from the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and current registration with CSMLS. In cases where no qualified applicants are available, consideration may be given to those willing to complete an accredited MLA program and achieve CSMLS certification within one year of hire.
- Willingness to travel to local Indigenous communities.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Manual dexterity for handling sharp instruments and small items.
- Capability to perform tasks with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to accurately label specimens and organize slides/requisitions.
- Flexibility to adapt to changes in operating procedures.
- Basic computer skills; experience with Meditech is preferred.
- Access to reliable transportation as travel may be necessary.
- Proficiency in additional languages is an asset, with French being preferred.

Hours- Permanent, Full-Time Position; 75 Hours Bi-weekly
The hourly wage is $26.27.
