Economic Analyst Business Data Lab

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce stands as the foremost and most engaged business network in Canada, representing a vast array of chambers of commerce and boards of trade alongside over 200,000 businesses spanning various sizes and sectors across the nation. Our vision is to cultivate a Canada rich in business opportunities, a robust economy, and an enhanced quality of life for all citizens. Our mission encompasses driving transformative change, fostering extensive partnerships, and serving as the unequivocal champion and catalyst for future business success. We achieve this through strategic policy advocacy, our expansive Canadian Chamber Network, and a comprehensive suite of essential business services.

Through our Chamber 2025 Strategic Plan, we aim to provide our members with critical insights into market dynamics, competitive landscapes, and emerging trends, as well as influence over the policies and decisions that shape business success and economic performance.

We seek to recruit exceptional talent who grasp the complexities of today’s business environment and possess an entrepreneurial mindset capable of supporting our objectives and addressing evolving business needs and opportunities.

What We Offer: Overview of the Role and Opportunity

In 2022, we inaugurated an innovative initiative known as the Business Data Lab (BDL), which has quickly become an essential resource for intelligence regarding Canadian businesses. Recently, we received significant support through a government budget announcement aimed at expanding our operations, thanks to our ongoing collaboration with Statistics Canada and financial backing from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.

Our mission is twofold: firstly, to enhance the understanding of business conditions by delivering forward-looking, real-time data and insights applicable to companies of all sizes, sectors, and regions across Canada; secondly, to democratize access to data, empowering our stakeholders, which include Canadian businesses—especially SMEs and underrepresented groups—business associations, government decision-makers, and academic researchers.

We are in search of an Economic Analyst to become part of the BDL's dynamic team, dedicated to advancing the Chamber's economic, data, and analytical capabilities. The ideal candidate will possess a robust technical skill set, intrinsic motivation, intellectual curiosity, critical thinking abilities, creativity, and a collaborative spirit.

Working at the BDL presents a unique opportunity for professional growth in a fast-paced, inclusive, and positive work environment. If you are eager to enhance your career and contribute to the success of Canadian enterprises, we welcome your interest.

Your Role: Key Responsibilities

As a member of the BDL's Economics and Forecasting division, your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and maintaining economic monitoring tools and forecasting models to support the prediction of essential economic indicators for the Canadian economy, such as GDP, inflation, employment, and retail sales.
  • Analyzing data from diverse sources, including Statistics Canada, high-frequency economic indicators, business surveys, and proprietary datasets from the BDL.
  • Conducting economic research and analysis on various topics pertinent to Canadian businesses, including market conditions, trends, and economic policies.
  • Collaborating with data scientists, researchers, and fellow economists to generate actionable insights and forecasts.
  • Contributing to the enhancement and upkeep of BDL data tools, including the Business Conditions Terminal and Local Spending Tracker.
  • Supporting the dissemination of BDL research findings through various formats, including reports, blogs, infographics, and social media.
  • Participating in the production of bilingual public quarterly reports that utilize data from the Canadian Survey on Business Conditions.
  • Producing high-quality, timely written analyses and commentaries for recurring macroeconomic and business data releases.
  • Conducting ad hoc economic analyses to assist the BDL and Chief Economist's presentations and public engagements.

What You Bring: Qualifications and Skills

  • A Bachelor's degree in Economics or a related field such as International Business, Finance, Commerce, or Public Policy.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and demonstrated proficiency in statistical software and data visualization tools (e.g., R, Python, Microsoft Azure, Power BI, STATA, SPSS, EViews, Haver, Excel/Visual Basic macros).
  • Experience in forecasting economic variables, managing large datasets, and conducting empirical research.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex data and insights clearly and succinctly.
  • High organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
  • A keen interest in and knowledge of Canadian business and public policy issues.
  • The ability to work independently while knowing when to seek input and guidance from colleagues and leadership.
  • A collaborative mindset that leverages the strengths of team members, coupled with a strong desire for personal and professional development.
  • An innovative approach with a proven track record of generating new insights and applying novel methodologies to data analysis.

What Sets You Apart: Preferred Qualifications

  • A graduate degree (Master's or PhD) in Economics or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in both English and French.
  • Experience in conducting mapping and geo-spatial analysis to produce location-specific insights.
