Child Protection Specialist - Union Position

Department: Protection

Job Type: Full time – 35 hours per week

Role Overview

The Child Protection Specialist is responsible for delivering equitable, respectful, and culturally appropriate services to First Nations children and families, adhering to the Agency's By-Laws, Policies, Procedures, and the Ontario Child Protection Standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish connections with relevant communities to explore service options and strategies addressing issues affecting First Nations children and families.
  • Provide a comprehensive range of ongoing child protection services to children and families on an assigned caseload, including both voluntary and non-voluntary clients.
  • Conduct investigations and assessments regarding allegations of child abuse and/or maltreatment.
  • Intervene in crisis situations, assess risks to children, and determine necessary actions, which may include alternative placements.
  • Advocate for children and families to access various support services within the community.
  • Collaborate as a team member to achieve departmental and team service objectives, including performing additional duties as required.
  • Coordinate and facilitate customary care and society placements, preparing all necessary documentation and supporting the child and family throughout the admission process.
  • Act as a witness in child welfare, criminal, and juvenile court matters to support the agency's recommendations.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) with prior child welfare experience in First Nations communities or two years of social service experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of OACAS New Worker Training Modules is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid "G" Ontario Driver's license, be willing to travel, and be able to work flexible hours and provide on-call services as needed.
  • Must provide a clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Proficiency in an Indigenous language is considered a significant asset.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, negotiation, decision-making, planning, organizational, administrative, and communication skills.
