Surrey, British Columbia, Canada Fraser Health Full time
Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Renal Dietitian II to join our team at Fraser Health. As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will provide expert dietetic practice to clients maintained in the Renal Program, working to improve their nutritional status and address multiple nutritional problems resulting from chronic renal disease, treatment modalities, and concomitant pathologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Screen and assess clients' nutritional status through chart review, client/family interviews, and discussions with healthcare providers.
  • Determine diet requirements for clients with renal insufficiency or failure based on biochemical, metabolic, and anthropometric parameters, as well as subjective global assessment.
  • Develop and implement a multiparameter renal diet, setting nutritional priorities for high-risk clients with multiple medical problems.
  • Monitor and evaluate clients' adherence and response to the multiparameter diet, making recommendations for nutrition interventions, including vitamin, mineral supplements, and/or nutritional supplements.
  • Participate in medical rounds to review issues related to renal clients' nutrition needs and relevant nutrition support protocols.
  • Counsel and educate clients and their families regarding the rationale and mechanics of a multiparameter diet, considering factors such as social, emotional, cultural, eating habits, coping capabilities, environmental, and financial situations.
  • Act as a resource to the interdisciplinary team and other healthcare providers regarding renal nutrition-related issues, including nutrition support, care management of complex patients, use of relevant equipment, and interpreting results.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of nutrition management guidelines, education materials, workshops, and tools for the renal client population.
  • Participate in the review, development, evaluation, and implementation of clinical pathways for the Renal Program.
  • Maintain related reports and statistical data, adhering to established standards and procedures.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities by collecting and submitting workload measurement data and reporting on effectiveness and/or variances to client care outcomes.
  • Provide input into the development, implementation, and evaluation of departmental and program goals, objectives, policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Participate in clinical research related to renal disease, collecting and analyzing data, evaluating information, and documenting findings, as required.
  • Participate in education, in-service sessions, and orientation sessions, as well as student education for all program team members, other healthcare staff, and students, as required.
  • Coordinate and supervise student activities to assist them in meeting their goals, in accordance with the established college or hospital curriculum.
  • Conduct and complete written student evaluations.
  • Attend departmental and committee meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

We require a graduate of a recognized Bachelor of Science degree program in Nutrition, with successful completion of an approved dietetic internship program. Two years' recent related clinical experience in general medicine/surgery in a large acute care facility, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, is also necessary. Current registration with the College of Dietitians of BC and eligibility for membership with the Dietitians of Canada are required.

We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in nutritional sciences, food preparation, and nutrient composition, as well as pathophysiology of kidneys and renal failure. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the etiology of renal disease, renal therapy practice/techniques, medication/nutrient interactions, and relevant metabolic changes in response to disease. Additionally, the candidate should have demonstrated in-depth knowledge of current renal nutrient composition of food to individualize a multiparameter diet, as well as knowledge and understanding of the psycho-social economic considerations of End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

The successful candidate will possess strong counselling skills to effect a change in eating behavior, as well as the ability to establish rapport with clients and family members to explore issues beyond the initial presented concerns. They will also be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and deal effectively with others, including the ability to work in a team and client-focused environment.

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, as well as opportunities for professional growth and development. If you are a motivated and experienced dietitian looking for a new challenge, please submit your application.
