POSITION SUMMARY
The Physical Therapist plays a crucial role in delivering therapeutic services to students with unique educational requirements. This position aims to enhance, develop, restore, or sustain students' active involvement in self-care, vocational tasks, leisure, and play within educational settings. The Physical Therapist operates under the guidelines of state and federal regulations and reports directly to the Supervisor of Special Education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engaging in the IEP/504 process to collaboratively assess the necessity of physical therapy as a related service under IDEA or as a reasonable accommodation under Section 504 of the ADA;
  • Collecting relevant information from students, parents, and educational team members regarding the child's functional motor skills in school environments;
  • Selecting, administering, and interpreting various screening tools and standardized assessments;
  • Working alongside students' IEP teams to evaluate eligible students' strengths and needs, facilitating their participation in meaningful school activities with or without support;
  • Designing and executing physical therapy interventions that enable students to benefit from their educational experiences;
  • Monitoring and documenting student progress resulting from the implemented physical therapy strategies;
  • Acting as a consultant to school staff, parents, and students to coordinate the provision of physical therapy services, which may include:
    • Interpreting assessments and making recommendations;
    • Explaining the potential effects of developmental, medical, and/or sensorimotor challenges on educational performance;
    • Training caregivers on the physical management of students, including safe lifting, positioning, assisted mobility, gross motor activities, vocational tasks, leisure pursuits, and equipment usage;
  • Establishing realistic expectations for student performance in the educational setting;
  • Selecting, modifying, or customizing adaptive equipment and assistive technology;
  • Collaborating with other team members to promote an effective physical therapy care plan;
  • Coordinating physical therapy interventions within the student's educational framework;
  • Modifying environments to enhance student access and participation in educational programs;
  • Educating school personnel and families to foster inclusion of students by developing, demonstrating, training, and monitoring the effectiveness of strategies and intervention activities, utilizing collected data for program adjustments, including the use of assistive technology;
  • Ensuring the safe transportation of students;
  • Referring students to additional related service professionals and healthcare providers as necessary;
  • Serving as a liaison among educational institutions, medical professionals, and medical equipment suppliers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in physical therapy from an accredited institution recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association.
  • Current certification from the National Board for Certification in Physical Therapy.
  • Licensed to practice physical therapy in Connecticut.
