About the Role:

The Alex is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Support Worker to join our team at Abbeydale Place and The Prelude, two low-barrier Place Based Supportive Housing (PBSH) programs. As a Support Worker, you will play a vital role in providing safe and stable housing to adults with a history of homelessness and a high level of vulnerabilities due to concurrent health disorders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide resident care and engagement services, including support with daily needs, care plans, and service plan goals.
  • Design and facilitate group and individual programming focused on areas such as recreation, harm reduction, skill building, cultural connection, and wellbeing.
  • Provide ongoing support to residents, including crisis management, de-escalation, and conflict resolution.
  • Complete hourly checks of the building to ensure the safety of all residents and respond appropriately.
  • Support with new intakes, including ensuring vacant rooms are cleaned and set up for new residents.
  • Adhere to the code of ethics and program procedure manual.
  • Complete administrative tasks, including writing case notes, data collection and entry, and assisting with online grocery orders.
  • Act as a support to the case management team and participate in training and team meetings.

Requirements:

  • Degree or Diploma in a related field of study (ex. social work, psychology, recreation therapy) is an asset, or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build connections and rapport with participants.
  • Demonstrated skills in facilitation, with the ability to coach and guide participants in various activities.
  • Experience with place-based supportive housing and crisis intervention is an asset.
  • Experience working with residents experiencing mental health barriers, homelessness, and poverty is an asset.
  • A non-judgmental, patient, friendly, and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • First Aid (Basic or Intermediate) – Level C CPR & AED within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action.
  • Willingness to work within anti-racist and anti-oppressive frameworks and actively engage in ongoing learning about these frameworks.

Work Environment:

  • Hours are 10:00 pm – 6:00 am Monday to Friday, with the possibility of adjustment based on program needs.
  • Continuous periods of sitting, with occasional standing and walking (sometimes up/down stairwells).
  • Occasional physical action requiring the ability to climb up/down stairwells, bend/crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel, and carry objects (more than 20Ibs) throughout the shift.
