The Orthoptist role is a vital allied health profession focusing on the assessment and management of eye movement disorders and related visual dysfunctions. This professional interprets diagnostic information and provides recommendations to the referring ophthalmologist regarding potential treatment strategies.
The Orthoptist is responsible for executing a variety of specialized and technical procedures to gather essential diagnostic data for the treatment and management of numerous ocular conditions.
Key competencies include proficiency in refraction, visual field assessments, low vision evaluations, Potential Acuity Meter testing, ophthalmic imaging, ocular ultrasonography, keratometry, optic disc tomography, and specular microscopy.
This position also plays a significant role in the educational development of medical students, orthoptic/ophthalmic medical technology students, and ophthalmology residents.
Qualifications include a baccalaureate degree plus a two-year training program, or a Master's degree in clinical vision science, along with graduation from an accredited Orthoptics/Ophthalmic Medical Technologists program. Proficiency in additional languages is considered an asset, with a preference for French.
