Job Overview: The Medical Billing Specialist plays a crucial role in managing patient billing processes, ensuring the accurate submission of insurance claims, and facilitating timely payments for healthcare services. This position demands a comprehensive understanding of medical billing practices, insurance protocols, and regulatory standards in Ontario. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong analytical capabilities, meticulous attention to detail, and the capacity to handle multiple responsibilities effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Billing and Coding:
    Precisely input patient billing data into the electronic health records (EHR) system.
  2. Assign the correct medical codes (ICD-10, CPT) to diagnoses and procedures.
  3. Examine and confirm patient information for accuracy and completeness.
  4. Insurance Claims Management:
    Submit claims to relevant payers, including provincial health insurance and private insurers.
  5. Follow up on outstanding or denied claims to ensure prompt resolution.
  6. Engage with insurance providers to clarify billing discrepancies and resolve issues.
  7. Payment Processing:
    Record payments received from insurance companies and patients to the appropriate accounts.
  8. Reconcile accounts and ensure accurate transaction documentation.
  9. Prepare and dispatch patient invoices and statements.
  10. Compliance and Documentation:
    Adhere to healthcare regulations, including privacy and confidentiality standards.
  11. Stay informed about changes in billing regulations and insurance policies.
  12. Ensure thorough documentation of all billing activities.
  13. Reporting and Analysis:
    Generate financial and billing reports for management assessment.
  14. Analyze billing data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  15. Provide insights for enhancing billing processes.

Qualifications:

  1. Diploma or certificate in medical billing, health administration, or a related discipline.
  2. Completion of a Medical Terminology course is preferred.
  3. A minimum of 2 years of experience in medical billing or a similar capacity in Ontario.
  4. Relevant healthcare and/or registration experience is advantageous.
  5. Familiarity with medical coding systems (ICD-10, CPT) and billing software.
  6. Knowledge of provincial health insurance billing procedures.
  7. Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  8. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHR systems.
  10. Experience with electronic medical records systems is preferred.
  11. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines efficiently.
