Clinical Operations Team Supervisor
Reporting to the Manager of WSFU/SOTU, the Clinical Operations Team Supervisor collaborates closely with the Complex Care and Recovery practice leadership team. This role is essential in anticipating the needs of the inpatient unit and working with the interprofessional team to ensure effective coordination of client-centered care, aligning with the vision and strategic goals of CAMH.
The Team Supervisor will take charge of communication, liaison, and coordination regarding client admissions, discharges, transfers, and appointments during assigned shifts, as well as for future shifts as necessary.
Key responsibilities include facilitating service delivery while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. The Team Supervisor will ensure clarity in nurse/patient assignments, reflecting accountability for care, and that client assignments are accurately recorded in accordance with established unit processes and CAMH standards.
This role involves coordinating breaks, break coverage, close observations, and client activities off the unit for relevant staff. Continuous monitoring and assessment of unit needs based on the milieu will be crucial, along with advocating for adjustments in staffing as required.
The Team Supervisor will assist in orienting new staff, including Nursing Resources Unit personnel, new graduate nurses, and agency staff, ensuring they are familiar with unit procedures and resources.
Collaboration with clinical supervisors/preceptors is essential to assign appropriate CAMH unit staff to support students from various disciplines, guiding them on unit procedures and assisting with client care issues.
Additionally, the Team Supervisor will work with the manager to facilitate staff participation in off-unit meetings, training, and educational events, ensuring nursing coverage for clients while considering unit acuity and the needs of orienting staff.
Responsibilities also include coordinating clinical rounds/forums (e.g., morning rounds, team huddles, unit debriefs) and care conferences as appropriate. The Team Supervisor will oversee shift reports in accordance with CAMH standards and facilitate communication within the unit and with other service areas.
Ensuring the accuracy of census/unit reports and adherence to unit procedures is vital, along with providing necessary reports such as bed flow and transfer of care reports.
Depending on the unit milieu, census, and staffing, the Team Supervisor may carry a patient assignment and undertake additional duties as required.
Support for a healthy workplace that values diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with all applicable standards is essential. The Team Supervisor will contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of best practices that advance excellence in nursing and client care.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario and possess a current B.C.L.S. (CPR) certificate. Preference will be given to those with a BScN and CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.
A minimum of two years (or 3900 hours) of clinical experience in the mental health and addictions field is preferred, particularly with a focus on forensics.
Experience working with populations experiencing major mental illness with a forensic history is essential, along with the ability to navigate the forensic system and mitigate risks associated with aggressive behavior and elopement.
Strong proficiency in problem-solving, decision-making, conflict resolution, negotiation, communication, delegation, critical thinking, team building, and interpersonal skills is required.
The candidate should possess the ability to think at a program level while participating in unit-level and organization-wide change initiatives.
Effective communication with the team, including management, both verbally and in writing, is crucial. Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of interdisciplinary team members is essential.
Demonstrated expertise in maintaining a culture of safety for staff, clients, families, and visitors in accordance with CAMH and regulatory standards is critical. Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language is an asset.
