Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Laboratory Supervisor to join our team at the University Health Network. As a key member of our Laboratory Medicine Program, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of our pre-analytic services department, ensuring the highest level of quality and efficiency in our laboratory practices and services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage a team of laboratory personnel, mobile phlebotomy and ECG teams, outpatient test centers, and customer service representatives
  • Ensure compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures, as well as applicable legislation affecting human resources
  • Participate in the grievance resolution process and coordinate the delivery of professional development programs
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies and procedures of the Clinical Laboratory
  • Ensure adherence to quality initiatives and recommend new/revised quality programs, guidelines, and measurements to facilitate the continued accuracy, reliability, and quality improvement of laboratory practices and services
  • Participate in quality improvement and workload measurement activities, including identifying problems, collecting and analyzing data, and resolving technical workflow and other problems
  • Participate in the preparation and monitoring of the operational budget and assist with the preparation of the capital budget
  • Maintain responsibility for laboratory equipment and products, including evaluating new laboratory instruments and products and making acquisition/utilization recommendations
  • Travel to UHN and external client sites as required to supervise staff, projects, and maintain liaison with clients
  • Maintain liaison with internal digital, patient relations, clinical, nursing, transport, and facilities teams to ensure smooth operation and troubleshoot operational problems
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and participate in candidate recruitment and selection
Requirements
  • Completion of a 3-year college program in Medical Laboratory Technology or recognized equivalent
  • Bachelor's degree in Business/Health Administration or recognized equivalent
  • 3-4 years of practical experience providing care in a hospital/medical environment with increased leadership/management responsibilities
  • 2 years of supervisory (formal or informal) experience in a laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation affecting human resources
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education
  • Client service-oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds, and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
