R&D Project Engineer Job Description

Napoleon is a leading innovator in engineering, manufacturing, and customer service. We're seeking a highly skilled R&D Project Engineer to lead the development of innovative products with external partners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop innovative products with external partners, including design, validation, prototyping, testing, and evaluation of production processes and business cases.
  • Prove targeted technologies and create risk assessments to ensure the team is aware of implications.
  • Develop an external network of subject matter experts, startups, national labs, corporate contacts, suppliers, partners, and universities to enable effective lead generation and technology scouting.
  • Conduct market research to determine competitive landscapes, technical trends, quality history, regulatory requirements, and customer needs.
  • Identify and work with key vendors, development partners, small batch suppliers, and high-volume production suppliers to understand capabilities, pricing, MOQs, and quality records.
  • Create, build, and run a process to support the Technology Scouting model, ensuring alignment with the Technology Roadmap.
  • Develop a test scope and product validation plan to ensure product safety, performance, robustness, building codes, and emissions requirements are met.
  • Manage supplier performance, including ownership of the Score Card Process, and resolve supplier issues.
  • Monitor key players, trends, industry announcements, and technology domains to stay abreast of changes in the players, threats, and opportunities.
  • Effectively communicate technology to key stakeholders and address questions to drive alignment around recommended actions and decisions.
Requirements:
  • University degree in Mechatronics or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years' experience in a directly related industry or completion of a 16-month R&D Engineering internship at Wolf Steel.
  • PMP designation considered an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Superior candidates will be proficient in Microsoft Project.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in 3-D modeling software, such as Solidworks, considered an asset.
  • Ability to communicate in Mandarin (verbal and written skills) preferred.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of electronics, including PCB layout, manufacturing, programming, connectivity, battery technology, software, and firmware considered an asset.
  • Technical understanding or experience with one or more radio technologies, including Cellular, Wifi, Bluetooth, considered an asset.
  • Familiar with the Canadian SR&ED program.
  • Knowledge and prior experience with the concept of IoT (Internet of Things).
  • Ability to deal with dynamic and rapidly changing environments requiring efficient and timely decision-making.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, including capability to drive executive meetings.
