About This Role

The Mental Health and Addiction Program (MHAP) is looking for a 0.5 FTE physician to join a collaborative inter-professional clinical team. This role involves providing evidence-based withdrawal management and comprehensive mental health and addiction care in an outpatient setting.

The physician will be expected to work a total of 18.75 hours per week, with on-site hours from Monday to Friday between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM. There may be opportunities for virtual care, which can be discussed further. This position may be shared among multiple physicians.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and manage substance use disorders.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to initiate and oversee withdrawal management protocols.
  • Assess and manage other medical and psychiatric conditions as necessary.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement interventions for suicide, self-harm, or harm to others.
  • Develop and execute care and discharge plans in partnership with clients, the clinical team, and families.
  • Facilitate transitions of care across various settings.
  • Deliver trauma-informed and culturally competent care.
  • Provide brief interventions related to substance use and concurrent disorders.
  • Maintain accurate and timely health records in compliance with documentation policies.
Work Schedule

The physician will work a total of 18.75 hours per week, with scheduled hours from Monday to Friday between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM.

Qualifications
  • Current medical license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Certification in addiction medicine from recognized organizations such as the College of Family Physicians Canada (CFPC), American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM), or International Society of Addiction Medicine (iSAM) is preferred.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain active credentials and privileges with NSHA.
  • Liability insurance through the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is required.
Clinical Experience
  • Experience in addiction medicine is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Experience in a medical withdrawal management service is beneficial; training and mentoring opportunities are available for those with limited experience.
