The Tailings and Mine Waste Management Practice at Hatch is looking for an intermediate-level Geotechnical Engineer specializing in tailings to join our expanding Geotechnical Discipline in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). This position is ideal for a driven professional with a solid technical background, eager to support the growth of our practice and enhance our capabilities within the Canadian cluster, collaborating with a global team of specialists in tailings and mine waste management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist engineers with projects that involve geotechnical work, including site investigations, dam foundation design, slope stabilization, and drainage design.
  • Develop and implement geotechnical investigation programs to support project engineers.
  • Contribute to the preparation of geotechnical studies and engineering reports.
  • Evaluate slope stability under various loading conditions, including static and seismic.
  • Predict water table locations in tailings storage facilities utilizing diverse tailings technologies.
  • Collaborate with project teams to analyze geotechnical models of tailings storage facilities.
  • Address geotechnical challenges such as settlements, liquefaction potential, slope stabilization, and pore pressure generation.
  • Oversee field operations, including monitoring boreholes, conducting in situ tests, and managing construction activities related to tailings storage.
  • Perform limit equilibrium analyses under varying loading scenarios.
  • Assist in developing deformation analyses for static and seismic conditions.
  • Support senior engineers with data analysis and report preparation.
  • Engage in additional tasks as required by the team.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Geological, or Mining Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in construction or fieldwork, including quality assurance and oversight of operational activities, is advantageous.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in an international team with a strong client focus.
  • Proficiency in GeoStudio, Slide, and advanced Excel; programming skills in Python or Visual Basic are a plus.
  • Willingness to travel internationally.
  • Valid passport with international recognition and a valid driver's license.
