Reporting to the Regional Manager, the Environmental Compliance Specialist is tasked with assisting in the maintenance of environmental regulations at the site level within a major organization in constant evolution. This role involves overseeing company procedures, conducting follow-ups, and preparing reports for regulatory authorities, ensuring compliance with environmental policies.
The Environmental Compliance Specialist provides professional guidance and support for the organization’s environmental initiatives. The head office will offer technical assistance to the incumbent, who will also be responsible for preparing reports and making final decisions. A strong collaborative approach in implementing programs and initiatives is crucial for success in this role.
Offer environmental guidance and regulatory compliance support to production teams and operational management on various environmental matters and obligations. Ensure that management and supervisors are informed of the site’s environmental regulatory requirements and procedures. Conduct site visits and audits, supporting the site team in executing work in accordance with all environmental requirements, procedures, and best practices. Provide results and recommendations for actions necessary following any non-compliance identified during site visits. Under the direction of the Regional Manager, prepare permits/updates and licenses related to environmental aspects such as audits, ECAs, etc. Develop and update environmental plans, procedures, and programs, ensuring their implementation by supporting production teams and conducting on-site activities. Act as the point of contact for local, provincial, or federal regulatory groups, coordinating field inspections and communications. Collaborate with Health & Safety to assist in preparing response plans or any EHS documents, ensuring comprehensive support in case of EHS emergencies at the site. Participate in and contribute to environmental input in site EHS activities such as safety meetings, tabletop exercises, emergency responses, incidents, investigations, and inspections. Manage site-based environmental issues and monitoring, including coordination with third-party consultants when necessary. Assist in the collection of environmental data (sound, air, etc.). Prepare regulatory reporting activities, including Annual Reports and formal responses/notifications. Document environmental incidents for external reporting (spills, etc.). Ensure proper handling, disposal, and reporting of chemicals, radiation, and other hazardous materials. Lead investigations and management of external complaints related to environmental issues, reporting findings to the Regional Manager. Assist in organizing and participating in Community Liaison Committees or any other required local committees. Provide support to buyers and commercial representatives in addressing environmental inquiries from clients or their auditors, including advice on the environmental classification of materials and their acceptability on our sites. Assist the ISO coordinator in various activities related to the implementation of AIM's Environmental Management System (EMS). Advise and support operations teams in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and collaborate with the H&S team to promote the EHS culture.Qualifications
Minimum 2-5 years of experience in an environmental role. A university degree in a relevant field. Experience in an industrial setting is an asset. Ability to work effectively within a team and solve problems. Strong organizational, planning, and prioritization skills. Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and web applications. Valid driver's license. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills for conducting training sessions. Willingness to travel as required for various locations.
