Position Overview

Under the direction of the Managing Director of the Future Cities Institute (FCI), the Strategic Communications Specialist will design, execute, and assess a comprehensive marketing and communications initiative aimed at enhancing the FCI's visibility, stature, and reputation. This cohesive communications strategy will align with both the FCI's and the University's objectives and values, ensuring effective dissemination across a wide array of internal and external professional networks.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Program Evaluation

  • Formulate, implement, and sustain a marketing and communications strategy for FCI that encompasses print, digital, and social media platforms.
  • Establish FCI's brand identity and core messaging.
  • Create and execute action plans to bring the strategy to fruition.
  • Oversee and manage the marketing and communications budget.
  • Develop metrics for assessing program success.
  • Design and maintain content strategies and editorial calendars to direct the creation of print and digital marketing materials.
  • Conduct research, including environmental scans and competitive analyses, to ensure FCI's goals are being achieved.
  • Monitor and evaluate metrics for web, digital, and social media initiatives.
  • Provide reports on program effectiveness and suggest improvements.

Content Development and Management

  • Create original content for FCI's print, digital, and social media channels, including articles, reports, brochures, and videos.
  • Assist in forming research teams and proposals with FCI members.
  • Support researchers in identifying knowledge users and crafting project-specific communication strategies.
  • Conduct interviews with FCI faculty, students, and stakeholders to develop compelling narratives.
  • Collaborate with various university departments to leverage existing content.
  • Prepare press releases and advisories in conjunction with relevant university units.
  • Manage and oversee multiple FCI-supported websites.
  • As needed, coordinate with vendors related to FCI's marketing and communications objectives.
  • Ensure high-quality and consistent delivery across all FCI marketing and communications efforts.

Stakeholder Engagement and Outreach Planning

  • Collaborate with FCI leadership and faculty on industry relations strategies.
  • Develop and implement outreach initiatives to disseminate future cities information to diverse audiences.
  • Maintain productive relationships with a broad network of partners and stakeholders.
  • Organize conferences, events, and initiatives to engage government and other stakeholders.
  • Keep community groups informed about university activities and initiatives.
  • Work closely with marketing and communications colleagues across the university.
  • Facilitate media contacts and seek opportunities to promote FCI messaging.
  • Manage promotional activities for FCI events, including lectures and research presentations.
  • Explore potential partnerships with various faculties.

Qualifications

  • Degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience in a strategic marketing and communications role, preferably within the university sector.
  • Experience in identifying and crafting stories for diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Public relations experience is advantageous.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation abilities.
  • Analytical skills to assess complex higher education issues.
  • Proficient in social media platforms, email management tools, content management systems, and analytics tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of video conferencing platforms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership and integrity in stakeholder interactions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Team-oriented approach to collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Familiarity with web production and basic image editing is a plus.
  • Capacity to build and maintain productive relationships across large organizations.
