The Laboratory Operations Assistant at BCCDC is responsible for executing essential laboratory tasks and administrative duties. This includes managing specimen intake, preparing samples for analysis, creating culture media and stock solutions, performing data entry, handling communications, generating labels, and organizing mail distribution.

Key Responsibilities:

Process incoming specimens and requisitions, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of details such as personal health numbers, names, birth dates, and required tests. Assign laboratory identifiers and organize specimens into batches for testing. Reach out to clients for any missing information and implement necessary corrections. Prepare samples for analysis by conducting tasks such as slide staining, performing concentration techniques, selecting suitable primary culture media, inoculating various media, and incubating according to established protocols. Create culture media and stock solutions by weighing dehydrated media and chemicals, dissolving them in appropriate solvents, measuring pH levels, adjusting as necessary, dispensing media, and sterilizing through filtration or autoclaving. Oversee inventory and equipment, conduct stock assessments, collaborate with users to identify needs, prepare order requests for approval, and maintain relevant stock control documentation. Communicate with supervisors regarding inventory issues and related systems. Receive and verify orders, check invoice accuracy, stock supplies, ensure proper storage and dating of media/chemicals/reagents, and distribute materials. Liaise with suppliers to obtain information and resolve discrepancies.

Qualifications:

Completion of secondary education (Grade 12) Successful completion of an accredited Laboratory Assistant training program A minimum of one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills and Abilities:

Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written. Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration. Excellent organizational abilities. Competence in operating a keyboard, performing data entry, and utilizing word processing and email applications. Typing speed of at least 25 words per minute. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Proficient in operating relevant laboratory equipment. Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
