Position Summary:

This role is situated within the Department of Parks and Recreation, specifically in the Parks and Environmental Conservation Division at Camp Riverview. Spanning 200 acres, Camp Riverview is a picturesque retreat located at the meeting point of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Throughout the year, it offers various programs for both adults and youth, including a residential camp for children aged 8-13 during the summer months. The programs at Camp Riverview aim to connect residents with nature, encourage participation in outdoor activities, and foster meaningful relationships.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Senior Camp Counselors

  • Oversee and coordinate both overnight and daily camp activities.
  • Collaborate closely with program staff to ensure the safety of all participants.
  • Manage daily cabin programs and activities.
  • Engage campers and staff in a variety of activities.
  • Supervise and guide junior counselors.
  • Ensure activities commence punctually.
  • Serve as the primary contact for logistical support of activities.
  • Organize the scheduling of camp events.
  • Foster a positive and healthy atmosphere for campers.
  • Promptly report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior regarding youth to the appropriate authorities.

Camp Counselors

  • Provide overall supervision and guidance to assigned campers.
  • Reside in the cabin with campers, ensuring their safety and well-being during the night.
  • Accompany campers on field trips.
  • Plan and execute daily activities.
  • Assist campers in exploring their talents and participating in special events.
  • Conduct cabin inspections for cleanliness and manage wake-up routines.
  • Oversee camper behavior and hygiene.
  • Report any concerning behavior to senior counselors or designated authorities.

Camp Support Staff

  • Assist in all camp activities by performing maintenance tasks, including meal service, dish cleaning, and grounds upkeep.
  • Serve as a line server, preparing the serving area and welcoming campers.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of the camp environment.
  • Set up equipment and ensure all camp facilities are well-maintained.
  • Selected candidates must participate in pre-camp training.

Environmental Coordinator

  • Oversee all environmental programs at Camp Riverview, including youth gardening, geo-caching, tent camping, horseback riding, deep-sea fishing, hiking, and bird watching.
  • Plan and implement daily environmental activities.
  • Work closely with program staff to ensure camper safety.
  • Report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior regarding youth to senior counselors or designated authorities.

Minimum Qualifications/Education/Experience:

Senior Camp Counselors

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful camp counseling experience.
  • Strong logistical, team-building, interpersonal, and program management skills.
  • Experience working with underserved communities is preferred.
  • Certifications in Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, and First Aid are required within 30 days of employment (training will be provided if not already certified).

Camp Counselors

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Minimum of 2 years of successful camp counseling experience.
  • Strong childcare, team-building, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with underserved communities is preferred.
  • Ability to create a positive and healthy environment for youth.
  • Certifications in Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, and First Aid are required within 30 days of employment (training will be provided if not already certified).

Camp Support Staff

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in support services.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Experience working with underserved communities is preferred.
  • Certifications in Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, and First Aid are required within 30 days of employment (training will be provided if not already certified).
  • If handling food, a food handler's certification is required (training will be provided if not already certified).
  • Must be physically fit and able to meet the physical demands of the role.

Environmental Coordinator

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in support services.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Experience working with underserved communities is preferred.
  • Certifications in Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, and First Aid are required within 30 days of employment (training will be provided if not already certified).

District residents who have graduated from a District of Columbia Public School or a District public charter school, or who have obtained a GED or equivalent from the District, will receive priority consideration for this entry-level position.
