Job Overview:
This role is situated within the Department of Parks and Recreation, specifically in the Parks and Environmental Conservation Division at Camp Riverview. Spanning 200 acres, Camp Riverview is a picturesque retreat positioned at the meeting point of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Throughout the year, it offers programs for both adults and youth, including a residential camp for children aged 8-13 during the summer months. The initiatives at Camp Riverview aim to provide residents the chance to engage with nature, partake in activities powered by human effort, and foster meaningful relationships.
Responsibilities:
Senior Camp Counselors
- Oversee and coordinate both overnight and daily camp activities
- Collaborate closely with program staff to ensure the safety of all participants
- Manage daily programming and activities for assigned cabins
- Actively engage campers and staff in various activities
- Supervise and guide Counselors
- Ensure timely commencement of activities
- Serve as the primary contact for logistical arrangements and support for activity coordinators
- Organize the scheduling of camp events
- Foster a positive and healthy atmosphere for campers
- Promptly report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior concerning youth to the Committee Chair(s)
Camp Counselors
- Provide overall supervision and guidance for assigned campers
- Reside in the cabin with campers, ensuring their safety and well-being after lights out
- Accompany campers on field trips
- Plan and execute daily activities
- Collaborate with campers to nurture their talents and support special events
- Conduct cabin inspections for cleanliness and manage wake-up routines
- Address behavior and hygiene issues among campers
- Report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior to Senior Counselors and/or the Committee Chair(s)
Camp Support Staff
- Assist in all camp activities by performing maintenance duties, including meal service, dish cleaning, and grounds upkeep
- Serve as a line server, preparing the serving area and welcoming campers
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of the site
- Set up equipment, water stations, and coolers, ensuring all camp areas are well-kept
- Selected Support Staff candidates must participate in training prior to the camp season.
Environmental Coordinator
- Manage all environmental programs at Camp Riverview, including Youth Gardening, Geo Caching, Tent Camping, Horseback Riding, Deep Sea Fishing, Hiking, and Birds of Prey activities
- Develop and implement daily environmental programming
- Work in conjunction with program staff to ensure camper safety
- Report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior to Senior Counselors and/or the Committee Chair(s)
Minimum Qualifications/Education/Experience:
Senior Camp Counselors
- Must be at least 21 years old
- A minimum of 3 years of successful camp counseling experience is required
- Strong logistical, team-building, interpersonal, and programmatic skills are essential
- Experience working with traditionally underserved communities is preferred
- Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, and First Aid certifications are required within 30 days of employment (training will be provided if not already certified)
Camp Counselors
- Must be at least 21 years old
- A minimum of 2 years of successful camp counseling experience is required
- Strong childcare, team-building, and interpersonal skills are essential
- Experience working with traditionally underserved communities is preferred
- Create a positive and healthy environment for youth
- Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, and First Aid certifications are required within 30 days of employment (training will be provided if not already certified)
Camp Support Staff
- Must be at least 16 years old
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in support services is required
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask effectively are essential
- Self-motivated and enthusiastic candidates are preferred
- Strong time management skills are necessary
- Experience working with traditionally underserved communities is preferred
- Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, and First Aid certifications are required within 30 days of employment
- If handling food, a food handlers' certification is required (training will be provided if not already certified)
- Candidates must be physically fit and able to meet the physical demands of the role
Environmental Coordinator
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in support services is required
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask effectively are essential
- Self-motivated and enthusiastic candidates are preferred
- Strong time management skills are necessary
- Experience working with traditionally underserved communities is preferred
