Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Director, Transportation Rail Operations to lead our rail transportation portfolio. This is a key leadership role that requires a strong understanding of rail operations, freight negotiations, and team management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the safe execution and effective negotiation of Nutrien's rail transportation portfolio, including ~17,000 rail assets and annual spend in excess of $700 million USD.
  • Develop and execute rail fleet and freight strategy, including negotiations with rail carriers and fleet leasers.
  • Lead a team of over 20 professionals, focusing on communication, collaboration, and growth and development.
  • Develop negotiation processes and governance that meet senior leadership expectations, using analysis and decision quality practices.
  • Assess, negotiate, and resolve business issues with a sense of urgency and integrity.
  • Responsible for rail forecasting, budgeting, and financial analysis for rail operations, freight, and rail fleet activities.
  • Responsible for achieving key operational metrics and reporting on rail performance, utilization, and incurred costs.
  • Optimize Nutrien's rail portfolio and develop strategic relationships with rail carriers, fleet leasers, and other rail business partners.
  • Work with internal departments to support commitments and contracts, focusing on embedding strong governance practices.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the North American rail market and provide regular updates to senior leadership.
  • Provide a consistent stream of industry and market feedback to inform Nutrien's rail strategy and achieve goals and objectives.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience in transportation, distribution, or logistics, with extensive knowledge of rail operations and rail freight.
  • Experience leading a large logistics and distribution team, with a proven track record of mentoring talent and promoting diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate and lead large contract negotiations, using strong tactics and relationship management skills.
  • Experience working with multi-level stakeholders to ensure alignment to short- and long-term business objectives.
  • Experience in a complex global organization, with exposure to broader supply chain activities.
  • Working knowledge of North America's rail network, with a depth of understanding regarding Class 1 rail carriers.
  • Ability to positively represent Nutrien externally, with various associations, service providers, governmental groups, and other logistics-related organizations.
  • Performance-driven personality, with results and solution orientation, and the ability to sustain a professional growth strategy while working independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative mindset and a proven ability to lead teams and influence effectively.
