Job Summary

The Government of Northwest Territories is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Land Use Planning Manager to join our team. As a key member of our department, you will be responsible for providing management and oversight in the development and review of regional land use plans, and providing advice to the Department and other Government of Northwest Territories departments on the implementation of these plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement regional land use plans that meet the needs of land users throughout the Northwest Territories.
  • Provide management and oversight in the development and review of these plans.
  • Collaborate with other Government of Northwest Territories departments to ensure that GNWT obligations related to regional land use planning are fulfilled.
  • Ensure that land use plans are consistent with the Northwest Territories Lands Act and Regulations, Commissioner's Land Act and Regulations, and other relevant legislation.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, land users, and other government departments.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in a relevant field, such as natural resource management, environmental studies, or planning.
  • At least 5 years of experience in planning or legislative and policy analysis and development, and project management, including at least 5 years of supervising the work of others.
  • Knowledge of Departmental Acts, Agreements, frameworks, strategies, and policies as they relate to the management, sustainable use, and administration of NWT public lands.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to public sector management, socio-economic research and analysis, strategic analysis, policy development, evaluation, and negotiation.
  • Knowledge of international initiatives, strategies, and conventions related to resource and land management, sustainable development, and conservation planning.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, political, and economic aspirations of Indigenous people and other Northerners and of land rights and land use.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and other stakeholders to develop and implement land use plans.
  • Knowledge of the Northwest Territories' unique cultural, social, and economic context.
