Toronto, Ontario, Canada Scotiabank Full time

Requisition ID: 204450

Join a purpose-driven team that values results and fosters an inclusive, high-performance culture.

The Senior Manager of Portfolio Management plays a crucial role within Scotiabank's Global Risk Management (GRM) International Banking Retail Credit Risk division, located in Toronto, Canada. This position is integral to effective portfolio management, ensuring alignment with our strategic vision while delivering essential executive reporting and communication.

As a leader in portfolio oversight, the Senior Manager will promote a customer-centric culture, enhancing team efforts to strengthen client relationships and utilize the extensive resources and expertise of the bank. This role is vital across our International Business locations, supporting local retail risk and business strategies throughout the International Banking landscape, all while adhering to Scotiabank's Risk Appetite and policy frameworks.

With a comprehensive understanding of both traditional retail mass markets and consumer/microfinance segments, the Senior Manager will skillfully identify key performance indicators, assess trends, and formulate risk management strategies. This position is essential for articulating portfolio performance, offering insights, and making recommendations that will influence the future of our international banking operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Country & Portfolio Oversight

  • Ensure effective monitoring and reporting on country performance trends and results relative to targets, considering origination trends and portfolio challenges by product, channel, segment, and specific programs.
  • Communicate findings with stakeholders, including potential impacts on losses and proposed recommendations to management; prepare updates for executive and regional management, as well as other International Banking stakeholders.
  • Leverage local data and Management Information Systems (MIS) to gain insights into results, collaborating with GRM partners to promptly identify emerging trends that may affect portfolio performance.
  • Provide month-end and quarter-end executive communications on portfolio trends, identifying and explaining any concerns or deviations.
  • Stay informed about changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operational procedures, management restructurings, and the implications of new technologies.

Relationships & Communications

  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including country managers and senior leaders, to facilitate executive communication, explain deviations, conduct portfolio reviews, and deliver quarterly and monthly reports.

Governance & Best Practices

  • Ensure that credit policies and procedures are established to balance risk and growth for retail portfolios through ongoing monitoring of key risk measures, providing guidance on opportunities for business expansion where appropriate.
  • Assist in meeting local regulatory requirements from both credit and operational perspectives, including the assessment and implementation of effective controls over lending policies and centralized processes for credit fulfillment and collections management.
  • Formalize local origination, account management, and collections policies to ensure compliance with established Global Risk Policies, making recommendations as necessary.
  • Conduct continuous benchmarking of best practices across the region, evaluating current local policies to identify opportunities for standardizing credit approaches and driving benefits while addressing gaps.
  • Lead comparative analyses of strategies among sites, providing insights and recommendations to establish divisional standards for credit practices.
  • Understand how the bank's risk appetite and risk culture should inform daily activities and decision-making.

Job Requirements:

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to summarize and present insights clearly and logically.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in risk or portfolio management, demonstrating a successful track record in leading and implementing change within the financial services sector.
  • Knowledge of customer segmentation, credit scoring models, including behavioral, custom, and credit bureau scores, as well as marketing models (attrition/retention) and their validation processes.
  • Project management skills to prioritize and balance multiple priorities effectively, with a proven history of leading and implementing change in banking initiatives.
  • Strong leadership, innovative, and motivational skills necessary to influence change.
  • Experience with projecting delinquency rates, loan loss provisions, and recoveries.
  • Strong financial analysis and writing skills, complemented by sound judgment and creativity.
  • Excellent negotiating and networking skills for conducting daily activities.
  • Fluency in Spanish is an asset (not mandatory).
  • A graduate degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field is preferred.
