About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Municipal Approvals Engineer to join our team at the Government of Alberta. As a key member of our environmental team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the effective regulation of municipal facilities within the framework of legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Issue approvals, renewals, amendments, and registrations for water treatment, wastewater treatment, storm drainage systems, and solid waste management facilities.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives for abatement issues, including activities/actions in situations where problems are predicted to occur, have occurred, or are occurring.
  • Represent regional interests and issues through participation on regional working societies, internal and external review teams/committees, and provide technical expertise and input to public hearing and appeal processes.
  • Develop and implement safe drinking water programs as outlined in the Water for Life strategy.
  • Conduct abatement activities at waterworks, wastewater, compost, and landfill facilities.
  • Provide technical support to internal staff and external stakeholders to ensure effective community-level service in the region, protection of the environment, and health and safety of the public.
  • Assist in the development of regional/departmental expertise on specific activities.
Requirements
  • University degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • 5 years of directly related experience, including water and wastewater treatment plant unit processes, quality assurance/control, relevant legislation, standards, and guidelines, public health risk assessment, and contaminant hydrology principles.
  • Eligibility for membership with APEGA.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • Broad knowledge of water, wastewater, air, groundwater, and soil quality issues.
  • Knowledge of water treatment technology, wastewater pollution control technology, stormwater management technology, water source protection, and their respective standards and requirements.
  • Understanding of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.
  • Ability to interpret technical information/concepts, including standards and requirements, to both technical and non-technical individuals.
