Position Overview:

The City of Toronto is seeking a skilled Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Specialist to join our dedicated team. This role involves performing essential maintenance and inspection tasks related to heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts proficient maintenance and inspection activities in the installation, upkeep, enhancement, testing, and repair of heating, ventilation, pool mechanical systems, and air conditioning units.
  • Prepares layouts and reviews schematics and project designs to facilitate new installations.
  • Ensures optimal system performance by selecting appropriate refrigerants, oils, and lubricants for refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Cleans systems and performs necessary tests.
  • Executes inspections, testing, and maintenance tasks, including overhauls of pumps, compressors, fans, and heat exchangers; initiates and concludes refrigeration and air conditioning systems to verify the functionality of safety controls.
  • Procures materials and equipment for installation projects, liaising directly with suppliers and manufacturers for parts ordering.
  • Engages in continuous professional development to stay informed about health and safety regulations, gas codes, and advancements in the HVAC industry.
  • Provides guidance and training to team members, effectively communicating activities both verbally and in writing, including report preparation and documentation.
  • Utilizes electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding and cutting tools, including brazing and soldering techniques.
  • Performs a variety of skilled tasks that do not necessitate the involvement of other licensed trades.
  • Employs various tools and equipment, ensuring their proper maintenance.
  • Travels to different work sites as required.
  • Works at heights when necessary.
  • Completes other related duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid Certificate of Qualification as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, compliant with Ontario regulations.
  • Must hold an Ozone Depletion Prevention Card.
  • Extensive experience in purging and charging refrigeration systems, conducting leak detection tests, and managing the start-up and shut-down of HVAC systems.
  • Proficient in the use, calibration, and testing of instruments and controls utilized in HVAC systems.
  • Experience in electric arc and oxy-acetylene cutting and welding, along with brazing and soldering.
  • Knowledge of materials and methods suitable for the installation and repair of refrigeration piping.
  • Familiarity with workshop and plumbing practices, as well as the operation of machine tools and instruments in electromechanical work.
  • Expertise in selecting appropriate refrigerants, oils, and lubricants for HVAC systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in maintaining machinery and equipment, including air compressors, pumps, and valves, employing preventive and predictive maintenance techniques.
  • Valid Class "G" Driver's License and eligibility for the City's equipment operating permits.
  • G1 Gas Fitter certification is required.

Additional Skills:

  • Thorough understanding of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning principles, with extensive experience in controlling and automating multiple HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, including single and three-phase applications related to motors and solenoid valves.
  • Experience in safely connecting and disconnecting electric power lines to equipment, adhering to lock-out procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation schematics; capable of producing sketches and working drawings.
  • Extensive experience in setting up and aligning equipment according to technical specifications.
