Roustabout Job Description

The Roustabout is a key member of the rig crew, responsible for assisting with crane work and deck activities on the drilling decks. This role requires a strong understanding of rig equipment and the ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with crane operations and deck activities
  • Perform manual handling of tubular and tools
  • Contribute to the processes of rigging up/down, drilling, and completing the well
  • Maintain the circulating, rotating, hoisting, and well control systems
  • Ensure compliance with Company policies, standards, and procedures
  • Provide visible leadership and promote operational excellence
  • Work with the platform deck crane operator to assist with loading and unloading of equipment
  • Transfer material and equipment as required
  • Strap and measure tubular and tools
  • Clean and drift tubular and tools
  • Prepare tubular, tools, and equipment for transportation to the rig floor
  • Respond to spills and assist with containment and clean-up
  • Relieve the Floorman on the rig floor
  • Perform pipe tripping operations
  • Perform break out and make up connections during drilling, back reaming, or tripping operations
  • Operate and maintain the rig floor mud bucket
  • Perform general maintenance of drilling equipment
  • Inspect snub lines, jerk lines, shackles, and cable clamps
  • Inspect and check dies in slips, tongs, and elevators
  • Inspect and check all rig floor safety belts
  • Assemble well-control or pressure-control equipment on the wellhead
  • Perform mud pump repairs and general pump maintenance
  • Mix mud materials and chemicals
  • Perform loading and unloading of tubular from the catwalk
  • Perform housekeeping and cleanliness around the rig floor working area
  • Perform alignment of stand pipe manifolds and bleed off lines
  • Clean the mast and substructure with a high-pressure steam cleaning unit
  • Perform scrubbing and cleaning of rig equipment and drilling packages
  • Perform chipping and painting on drilling packages and equipment
Requirements:
  • High School diploma required
  • Ability to obtain offshore or onshore certifications
  • Previous experience in the oil industry preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Ability to comprehend, remember, and follow verbal and written directions
  • Ability to work in hazardous conditions and at heights
  • Ability to work in noisy environments and small enclosed spaces
