The Copper Mountain mine is currently generating around 100 million pounds of copper equivalent annually. With an upcoming mill expansion and the integration of New Ingerbelle, the mine is projected to produce approximately 140 million pounds of copper equivalent each year over the initial 20 years of its 32-year operational lifespan based on current reserves. Copper Mountain is dedicated to the safe and responsible extraction of copper, which is crucial for a sustainable energy future.

The Role

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is in search of a Tailings Supervisor for our Copper Mountain Mine. This role follows a 7x7 schedule, alternating between day and night shifts.

Tailings Supervisor

Location

The Copper Mountain Mine is situated near Princeton, British Columbia, in the picturesque Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-focused town offering a variety of outdoor activities and is conveniently located near both Vancouver and the Okanagan region.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Tailings Superintendent, the Tailings Supervisor is tasked with ensuring the safe and efficient supervision, coordination, and scheduling of personnel to achieve tailings placement goals and uphold quality standards while maintaining the safe operation of the tailings management facility (TMF).

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with the tailings management facilities' operational manual,
  • Lead and coordinate production efforts with maintenance and technical teams to ensure safe operations,
  • Guarantee adherence to mining regulations and the site’s safety, quality, and environmental standards,
  • Assist in developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Job Hazard Assessments (JHA), actively participating in Health & Safety initiatives,
  • Ensure staffing requirements are met and coordinate employee activities,
  • Conduct regular inspections of the workplace and TMF,
  • Identify and address potential work-related issues, including health, safety, and environmental concerns,
  • Establish methods to meet work schedules and coordinate activities with other departments,
  • Provide production planning information to meet operational objectives,
  • Review and report on tailings equipment to identify efficiency improvements,
  • Contribute to the development of methods and tools to minimize downtime,
  • Monitor equipment wear and requisition necessary materials and supplies,
  • Supervise and engage in executing maintenance plans in the Mill,
  • Ensure preventive and predictive maintenance plans are scheduled using a computerized management system,
  • Maintain records of maintenance activities,
  • Report on maintenance activities and equipment performance,
  • Participate in the recruitment, training, and development of employees to cultivate top talent,
  • Manage performance through setting expectations, conducting reviews, and providing constructive feedback,
  • Identify training opportunities to enhance team versatility and train staff on production methods and safety protocols,
  • Foster a positive work environment to maintain strong relationships with all employees,
  • Organize and schedule activities for certified trades, laborers, and contractors as needed,
  • Support the coordination and execution of mill shutdowns,
  • Uphold housekeeping standards in all areas of responsibility,
  • Perform additional responsibilities to support operations related to the Tailings Supervisor role as required.

Education & Experience

  • Expertise in production and/or maintenance strategies for large-scale mineral processing plants and/or tailings management facilities,
  • Ten (10) years of mill/crusher operations experience, with at least three (3) years in a supervisory role, demonstrating a successful track record in leading teams in an industrial setting,

OR

Five plus (5+) years in a maintenance role, with a strong grasp of maintenance process improvements and control strategies,

OR

A Bachelor's degree in mining, metallurgy, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience, Current BC Mine Supervisor Certificate or the ability to obtain certification within three months of assuming the position, Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with computerized control and operating systems, Valid driver's license and access to personal transportation.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, complemented by strong interpersonal abilities,
  • Proven leadership and team-building skills, with the foresight to address potential challenges while effectively supervising staff and contractors,
  • Strong analytical skills to identify efficiencies and recommend improvements to optimize operations,
  • Solid understanding of operating equipment and the ability to guide operators in the safe use of graders, excavators, and dozers,
  • Familiarity with dam safety operations and coordination with engineering on safety concerns,
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, multitasking environment,
  • Strong work ethic and a commitment to continuous improvement,
  • Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with key partners and internal customers,
  • Competence in completing forms such as transmittals, timecards, and expense reports,
  • Must meet pre-employment testing requirements.

Working Conditions

  • Collaborative team environment with regular and impromptu meetings.
  • Role involves manual dexterity for computer use and peripheral devices,
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous environments requiring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),
  • Frequent exposure to challenging conditions such as noise and working in dusty or wet environments,
  • Physical demands include heavy lifting, awkward positions, and prolonged standing or walking,
  • Significant exposure to unfavorable working conditions, including confined spaces and elevated areas,
  • Physical tasks may involve moving equipment or supplies over 50 pounds,
  • Job requires being clean-shaven.

Salary Range

$120K - $134K / annum.
