The Copper Mountain mine is currently producing around 100 million pounds of copper equivalent annually. With an upcoming mill expansion and the integration of New Ingerbelle, the Copper Mountain Mine is projected to yield approximately 140 million pounds of copper equivalent each year over the initial 20 years of its 32-year lifespan based on existing reserves. Copper Mountain is devoted to the safe and responsible extraction of copper, which is essential for a sustainable energy future.

The Role

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is looking for a Tailings Supervisor at our Copper Mountain Mine. This role operates on a 7x7 schedule, alternating between day and night shifts.

Tailings Supervisor

Location

The Copper Mountain Mine is situated near Princeton, British Columbia, in the picturesque Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-focused town with a wide range of outdoor activities. It is also conveniently located near Vancouver and the Okanagan region.

Summary of Responsibilities

Reporting to the Tailings Superintendent, the Tailings Supervisor is accountable for the safe and efficient oversight, coordination, and scheduling of personnel to achieve tailings placement objectives and quality benchmarks while ensuring the continuous safe operation of the tailings management facility (TMF).

Key Duties

  • Ensure compliance with the tailings management facilities' Operations Management System (OMS) manual,
  • Lead and coordinate production efforts with maintenance and technical teams to ensure safe operations,
  • Guarantee adherence to mining regulations and the Mine site's safety, quality, and environmental standards,
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Job Hazard Assessments (JHA), actively participating in Health & Safety initiatives,
  • Ensure staffing requirements are met, coordinating and scheduling employee activities,
  • Conduct regular inspections of the workplace and TMF,
  • Identify, investigate, and document potential work issues, including health, safety, and environmental concerns,
  • Establish methods to meet work schedules and coordinate activities with other departments,
  • Provide production planning information to meet objectives,
  • Review and report on tailings equipment to identify efficiency improvements,
  • Contribute to the development of methods and tools to minimize downtime,
  • Monitor equipment wear and requisition necessary materials and supplies,
  • Supervise and participate in executing maintenance plans in the Mill,
  • Ensure preventive and predictive maintenance plans are scheduled via a computerized maintenance management system,
  • Maintain an updated database for all maintenance activities,
  • Provide reports on maintenance activities and equipment performance,
  • Participate in the recruitment, training, and development of employees to retain top talent,
  • Manage performance through expectations, reviews, feedback, and coaching,
  • Identify training opportunities to enhance employee versatility and provide training in production methods and safety procedures,
  • Foster a positive work environment to maintain strong relationships with all employees,
  • Organize and schedule activities for certified trades, laborers, and contractors as needed,
  • Support the coordination and execution of mill shutdowns,
  • Uphold housekeeping standards in all areas of responsibility,
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required to support the operations related to the Tailings Supervisor role.

Qualifications

  • Expertise in production and/or maintenance strategies for large-scale, continuous mineral processing plants and/or tailings management facilities,
  • Ten (10) years of mill/crusher operations experience, with at least three (3) years in a supervisory role, demonstrating a successful track record in leading teams in an industrial setting,
  • Alternatively, five (5+) years in a maintenance role with a strong grasp of maintenance process improvements,
  • Bachelor's degree in mining, metallurgy, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience,
  • Current BC Mine Supervisor Certificate or the ability to obtain certification within three months of assuming the position,
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with computerized control and operating systems,
  • Valid driver's license and access to personal transportation.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities,
  • Proven leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to anticipate and address challenges while supervising staff and contractors,
  • Strong analytical skills to identify efficiencies and recommend improvements to optimize operations,
  • Solid understanding of operating equipment, providing guidance for safe operation of graders, excavators, and dozers,
  • Familiarity with dam safety operations and coordination with engineering on safety concerns,
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, multitasking environment,
  • Strong work ethic with a commitment to continuous improvement,
  • Capability to build and maintain strong relationships with key partners and internal customers,
  • Competence in completing forms such as transmittals, timecards, and expense reports,
  • Must meet pre-employment testing requirements.

Working Conditions

  • Collaborative team environment with regular and ad-hoc meetings.
  • Manual dexterity required for using desktop computers and peripherals,
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous environments requiring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),
  • Frequent exposure to challenging conditions such as noise and working in dusty or wet environments,
  • Physical demands include heavy lifting, awkward positions, and prolonged standing or walking,
  • Exposure to unfavorable working conditions, including confined spaces and elevated surfaces,
  • Requires the ability to push, pull, and move equipment or supplies over 50 pounds,
  • Clean-shaven appearance is required for the role.

Compensation

Salary range: $120K - $134K per annum.
